Introduction to Fluids in Motion
— This paper serves as an introduction to the concept of fluid motion. It is an attempt made to introduce the fundamentals of fluid flow. Fluid motion manifests themselves in many different ways. Some common assumptions used to simplify a flow situation are related to fluid properties. Under certain conditions viscosity can affect the flow significantly. The compressibility of a gas in motion should be taken into account if the velocities are very high. Fluid flow analysis is used to predict the behavior of systems which involves fluid flow. Computational Fluid Dynamics is the method to perform Fluid flow analysis and utilizes numerical methods and algorithms to address the problem that includes fluid flow. This paper consists of a brief view of different types of flow, basic equations etc. At the outset the beginning is the description of the basic ideas of fluid flows, Flow patterns, methods to describe fluid motion etc. The paper ends with general analysis of fluid motion through ANSYS CFD software, because the visualization of flow patterns permit the development and better understanding in formulating a mathematical problem.
Kinematics of Fluid: A Python Approach
IJRAR, 2022
In this communication, an attempt has been made to develop a python module to understand the motion of a fluid. The functions for substantive derivative, total acceleration, rotation, angular, and linear deformation rates have been developed using the SymPy module. To check the accuracy of the developed modules, five problems were selected, and the developed codes were tested and validated. As a result, the developed modules have shown high accuracy with the least effort in all the cases. Furthermore, the error normally encountered while hand calculations have been eliminated using python programming.
Experimental study of the flows in a non-axisymmetric ellipsoid under precession
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2021
Precession driven flows are of great interest for both, industrial and geophysical applications. While cylindrical, spherical and spheroidal geometries have been investigated in great detail, the numerically and theoretically more challenging case of a non-axisymmetric cavity has received less attention. We report experimental results on the flows in a precessing triaxial ellipsoid, with a focus on the base flow of uniform vorticity, which we show to be in good agreement with existing theoretical models. As predicted, the uniform vorticity component exhibits two branches of solutions leading to a hysteresis cycle as a function of the Poincaré number. The first branch is observed at low forcing and characterized by large amplitude of the total fluid rotation and a moderate tilt angle of the fluid rotation axis. In contrast, the second branch displays only a moderate fluid rotation and a large tilt angle of the fluid rotation axis, which tends to align with the precession axis. In add...
Applications of Heat, Mass and Fluid Boundary Layers, 2020
Abstract The development of fluid dynamics has been strongly influenced by its numerous applications in engineering (including aeronautical and marine), environmental and biological sciences, meteorology, oceanography, and the study of blood flow. The phenomena of fluid motion are governed by known laws of physics: conservation of mass, classical mechanics (Newton's laws of motion), and thermodynamics. Therefore, this chapter discusses the analysis of fluid in motion and presents their derivation using the basic laws of physics, together with the physical properties of the fluid. The basic equations of viscous flow and heat transport are explained with adequate derivative analysis to make them conceivable. The momentum equation and principle of conservation of momentum were used to predict forces induced by flowing fluids. Navier–Stokes equations and constitutive equations for non-Newtonian fluids that are of tremendous importance in applications in industrial manufacturing processes are analyzed. In the analysis of the slip flow boundary condition, energy equations are employed taking into account the velocity slip and temperature jump.
