Social Construction of Gender 2008
This paper is an overview of how gender is socially constructed. It discusses how the biological basis to the differences between the sexes does not explain their lived differences and inequalities. The paper looks at the sex-gender distinction and the different explanations that have been given for the near universal inequality between men and women. A discussion on gender regimes in different domains of social life follows one on how religion and kinship shape particular constructions of gender. Finally the paper discusses how various dimensions of social stratification articulate with and construct gender.

ARTICLE SUMMARY To envision a post-gender world, it is important to pay some attention to the patterns of gender discrimination that operate in society. Gender is a social construction, meaning that masculinity and femininity are constructed and maintained through social interactions and socialization. The social constructionist framework of gender has created a binary between masculinity and femininity: for example, women are trained to be submissive and men to be aggressive. However there are avenues by which this inequality can be eradicated, both at the micro and the macro social level. Without giving attention to the patterns and systems of gender discrimination that exist in society, a post-gender world remains beyond reach. However, changes can be made at both the macro and the micro levels. At the micro level, it is important to alter the imbalance of labor within the household, where women disproportionately shoulder the household responsibilities. Parenting also operates on a micro level, and in order to attain a post-gender society it is vital to socialize children beyond the gender binaries. At the macro level, changes need to happen in the schools, workplace and media. Schools should discourage gender-based bullying, and workplaces need to reduce discrimination against women. Media portrayals of gender have also been problematic for a long time. Television shows and movies legitimize gender binaries, thereby reinforcing gender discrimination. To attain a gender-neutral society, the media rhetoric has to change. At the core of a post-gender society are intersectionality and an appreciation of diversity. As much as we discuss changes in gendered behavior institutionally, it is important to take into account race, nationality, sexuality, and other differences.
Gender: concept, category and more (a theoretical confusion)

The confusions that have originated from the gender category are explored and described. A confusion that arises from the feminist academy in the distinction as to how the biological bodies of human beings become social, and therefore, every social interaction is sexed. The gender category has been widely divulged in the last years, but while doing it, its use has become freer and less rigorous, identifying it with feminine, women, feminist movements and social movements of women. Underlying theoretical and epistemology are proposed. Theoretical essays that borrow categories of social analysis from conceptual schemes are revised, but these are decontextualized when using them for theorizations of gender. Difficulties arise in the theoretical categories of sociological character and of political science such as social construction and power, they are transported without epistemic mediation or specification to the language of other disciplines, mainly psychology or anthropology.

Considering the fact that society treats women and men differently by assigning different characteristics, roles and responsibilities, the increasing number of studies on the causes of these differences has drawn attention to the concepts of "sex" and "gender". The concept of gender can be named as the stereotypes, judgments and prejudices acquired by the individual regarding gender during the socialization process, unlike the biological sex of the person. Gender is a socio-cultural phenomenon that emerges with the socialization process of the individual. The concept of gender is used to express the qualities built within the complex social relations network, the meanings attributed to femininity and masculinity, and the behaviors expected from them, apart from the concept of gender, which denotes the biological characteristics that define men and women. In this study, sex, gender roles, Gender equality/ Gender inequality and related theoretical approaches will be discussed in order to better understand the concept of gender.
Gender refers to the array of socially constructed roles and relationships, personality traits, attitudes, behaviors, values, relative power and influence that society ascribes to the two sexes on a differential basis. Whereas biological sex is determined by genetic and anatomical characteristics, gender is an acquired identity that is learned, changes over time, and varies widely within and across cultures.

This discussion-based course is designed to acquaint students with key texts in gender theory from the late 1950s to the present. We begin by examining basic concepts such as gender roles and gender inequality and proceed with more complex issues related to gender performativity and biopolitics. Required readings include classic and contemporary texts representing various approaches in the frame of gender theory. Drawing on texts by Simone de Beauvoir, Raewyn Connell, Judith Butler, Michelle Foucault, Maria Lugones, Jack Halberstam, Dean Spade, and others, we will explore the entanglement of gender, sexuality, body, race, punitive system (prisons), and coloniality. Seminars will comprise a combination of brief lectures, text discussions, and work in small groups for better comprehension of the main ideas of the readings. Students will also be invited to attend presentations and a workshop, "Appropriated feminism," that will take place at the University of Greifswald on January 17-18, 2023.

Although psychologists have become increasingly interested in such areas as sex differences, gender identity, and sex roles, the concept of gender remains ill defined. We undertake a critical review of this concept and try to show that (a) if the term gender is taken to refer to a set of biological and psychological varia• bles which are related to one another in a complex way, and (b) if gender dif ferences arc treated as differences in degree and not in kind, then the concept of gender can be used in a meaningful way to make sense of the things we ob• serve about people.
