First report of Curvularia akaiiensis as a causal agent of leaf spot disease on Vetiver

Vetiver is currently cultivated in Indonesia; however, it is susceptible to leaf spot disease. Although usually minor, this hampers growth under favourable conditions. Through morphology and genetics study, we identified Curvularia akaiiensis as the causative agent, marking the first documentation of its role in vetiver leaf spot disease.

Morphological and molecular characterization of Curvularia lunata pathogenic to andropogon grass

The fungal genus Curvularia is associated with a number of diseases in plants, commonly producing foliar spots in forage grasses. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphological and molecular diversity of the isolates of Curvularia sp. associated with Andropogon seeds, and to assess both their capacity to transmit disease and the pathogenicity of this fungus to crop. Ten isolates of Curvularia sp. were sourced from Andropogon seeds from agricultural producing regions in the Brazilian states Tocantins and Pará. Morphological characterization was achieved by observing fungus colonies and conidia and molecular characterization by DNA extraction and amplification with sequence-specific primers.

First report of Curvularia muehlenbeckiae, the causal agent of Curvularia leaf spot on pecan (Carya illinoinensis) in China

The pecan (Carya illinoinensis) industry is largely affected by the increased incidence of diseases (Xiao et al 2021). Leaf spot symptoms were identified in an orchard of cultivar Pawnee pecan trees at Zhejiang A&F University, Zhejiang, China in August 2020. Small black spots occurred on the veins and edges of the leaves and nearby tissues turned yellow and slightly deformed (May to July). The spots (0.5-1.5cm) spread to all leaves with 25% to 40% leaf drop occurring in almost all trees between August and October. The causal pathogen was isolated from leaves with target symptoms using the following method: surface sterilized with 70% alcohol (2×, 30 s), rinsed with sterilized water (3×), leaf spots excised and placed on PCA media, and left to incubate at 28℃ in the dark for 3-d. Diversity of fungal pathogens associated with loquat and development of novel virulence scales

Loquat [Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.] is an important fruit crop in Pakistan; however, a constant decline in its production is noted due biotic and abiotic stresses, particularly disease infestation. Fungal pathogens are the major disease-causing agents; therefore, their identification is necessary for devising management options. Novel Curvularia species from clinical specimens

The fungal genus Curvularia includes numerous plant pathogens and some emerging opportunistic pathogens of humans. In a previous study we used morphology and sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gpd) gene to identify species within a set of 99 clinical Curvularia isolates from the USA. Seventy-two isolates could be identified while the remaining 27 isolates belonged in three unclassified clades that were tentatively labelled Curvularia sp. I, II and III. Curvularia is a Pleosporalean monophyletic genus with a great diversity of species, including relevant phytopathogenic, animal and human pathogenic fungi. However, their microscopic identification is difficult due to overlapping morphological features amongst species.
