This paper examines the pertinent issue of insecurity in Nigeria and its implication for socio-economic development. Available data on the level and dimensions of insecurity in Nigeria reveals an increase over time, which constitutes serious threat to lives and properties, hinders business activities and discourages local and foreign investors, all which stifles and retards Nigeria’s socio-economic development. This rising wave of insecurity has not abated but has assumed a dangerous dimension which is threatening the corporate existence of the country as one geographical entity. In the light of the above the paper recommends that government must be proactive in dealing with security issues and threats, through modern methods of intelligence gathering, and sharing among security personnel, training, logistics, motivation, and deploying advanced technology in managing security challenges. Nigeria as a country gained her independence on October 1st 1960 and after a temporary civilian government and a long reign of military power, which experienced a series of coup d’état it was restored to a democratic federation in 1999. A country with a population of over 168 million and rich in both human and natural resources faces some concerns such as corruption and security challenges. These challenges are on the increase because of lack of solutions to the issues and as such posed several threats to its inhabitants as well as create economic implications. There are some contentions as to whether the current systems handling security issues are effective. This paper will provide an in-depth analysis at the level of insecurity in Nigeria using past and current events. It will also examine existing domestic and external policies channelled towards managing the security concerns. This dissertation addresses these questions: Firstly, what is the highest form of security concern in the country? Secondly, what role do the leaders play in ensuring security? Thirdly, what can be done to counter the security challenges? And lastly, what are the possible causes of insecurity in Nigeria? Following a careful review of existing literature, in spite of the growing security issues in Nigeria, there are limited academic works thus limiting in-depth insight into key areas of security concerns This dissertation uses a mixed method approach which combines the collective use of qualitative and quantitative data methodology. From these findings, the study identifies evidence linking different group causes of the security issues and also loophole in the available policies. Such awareness can help the Nigerian Government, NGOs, International Organisations and other interested bodies improve policies for security challenges especially in developing diverse nationals. Although, previous studies restrict findings to, identifying one cause of security challenges. This comprehensive study identifies both direct and indirect causes of the issues and as such allows for collective understanding. This bundling of the causes of security challenges in Nigeria will allow other researchers focus on providing possible solution to the issues. The challenges of insecurity and its devastating effects on socioeconomic development in Nigeria especially since 1999 when Nigeria's nascent democracy began have remained an intriguing one. Indeed, the various problems related to the challenges of insecurity such as terrorism, kidnapping and so on as they affect socioeconomic development in Nigeria raises a lot of issues, viz: What are the main causes of these problems of insecurity in Nigeria and how have they affected socioeconomic development, why is the Nigerian government so proactive in tackling the issue of insecurity; why has government efforts continued to fail, what pragmatic and practical measures can the government take in curtailing the issue so as to enhance development? It is against the background of the aforementioned issues that this chapter reassesses the problems of insecurity challenges and socioeconomic development in Nigeria. The findings of the study are that government needs to adapt a more pragmatic, creative and practical approach in tackling the issue. The methodology adopted for this chapter is based on historical cut multidisciplinary approach. It is hoped that the chapter will contribute to the literature on peace and security studies as well as development studies.

Nigeria has been under severe internal security threat in recent times. Almost on a daily basis, the media is filled with news of terrorist activities and crimes of other nature, news that in time past were alien to the country. The rate of insecurity is alarming, disturbing and worrisome. With insurgency in the north and militancy in the south, insecurity is a growing quagmire to national peace in Nigeria. Indeed, insecurity is a pain in the neck of this nation. This essay examines the level of insecurity in Nigeria in relation to the economic growth and development of the country. The essay reviews the causes and negative effect of insecurity to the economy of Nigeria with a bid to proffer solutions to the menace of insecurity. The essay suggests that to secure the future, all hands must be on deck to ensure the safety of lives and properties thereby promoting economic growth and development in Nigeria.

Rising Insecurity in Nigeria: Causes and Solution

Nigeria is currently inflated in security crisis which has turn into an unending challenge, not only by defying security procedures but making scorn of the efforts of the law enforcement agents and the millions of naira annually budgeted by the government as security votes. This study, therefore, examines the rising insecurity in Nigeria with causes and solutions to it. The finding revealed that the causes of insecurity are the menace of unemployment and poverty, elite exploitation of ethnicity and religious differences, corruption, weak security apparatus, porous border, marginalization and inequality in the country, and bad governance and poor leadership. The solution range from opposing the aforementioned causes of insecurity in this paper.
