Approche de la dynamique évolutive de systèmes d'enceintes. L'exemple de MITRA III (Garons, Gard, France) (original) (raw)
The Fontbuxian occupation of Mitra 3 is situated in the heart of the Costières Plateau, which separates Vistrenque Plain and the Camargue, in the commune of Garons in the Gard department. The site presents a new example of settlement during the Fontbouïsse culture, represented by successive enclosure ditch systems. The extremely regular organization of the successive ditch systems is unparalleled at other sites from the same period. The initial enclosure and its main entrance were used as a base to establish two new and bigger enclosures. After the abandonment of this first phase, dating to around 2500 BC (cal.), the initial enclosure system was modified and a new ditch was installed, sealing off the original entrance. This second phase enclosure was more angular and was comprised of long segmented ditch sections with sharp angular turns. The discovery of a mud-brick structure on the internal edge of the enclosure ditch perhaps the first known example of a rampart wall during the Fontbouïsse Culture. Indeed, it may be related to a dry-stone wall type enclosure, discovered in the ‘garrigues’ of Montpellier, and the external wall built with layers of limestone, which collapsed into the enclosure ditch of the Peirouse Ouest site (Marguerittes, Gard). The Mitra 3 structure was remarkably well conserved.
