Academic dishonesty and misconduct: Curbing plagiarism in the Muslim world

Intellectual Discourse, 2014

Plagiarism is the theft of someone's ideas or language, and is a form of cheating which is morally and ethically unacceptable. This study analyses the nature of plagiarism from an Islamic perspective and its prevalence in institutions of higher learning in the Muslim world, especially among faculty members. It also examines the ways in which universities attempt to minimise or marginalise plagiarism. This study is warranted by the fact that there is relatively very little research on the issue of plagiarism at universities in the Muslim world and that existing research seldom addresses the issue of academics engaged in such unethical practices. Based upon existing surveys, interviews, and documentary sources, the study found that in earlier periods, standards were not inevitably lower than those that exist today and that the scope for condemning plagiarists has always existed. It also found that despite Islam's loathing, the incidence of plagiarism has grown significantly among Muslim students and faculty members in the Muslim world. The response to plagiarism varies from country to country. Some Muslim countries tolerate plagiarism, while others are taking steps to curb it. Institutions in Malaysia approach the problem of plagiarism as a matter of morality and crime that emphasise the need to develop writing and researching skills. They resort to honour codes, emphasise law and enforcement, and teach ways to write and cite. However, the success of these methods needs to be further probed.

The existence of a code of ethics in a profession means that unethical behaviour may not be allowed or tolerated. Thus, members of a profession do not display their unacceptable behaviour. Code of ethics for academics is distinct from moral codes that may apply to the culture, education, and religion of a whole society. Academics play the role of educators, researchers, administrators, consultants, professional colleagues, and professors. This article tries to identify a code of ethics for academics in their role as educators/teachers. There is a lack of Turkish academic code of ethics. Thus, the research sample is consisted of 100 academics employed in both public and private universities in Istanbul. We used the five point scales of “The Statement on Professional Ethics” for academics developed by AAUP and refined by AOM and AMA. Based on the analysis, we identified the hypernorms related to academics in their role as educators. In scientific writing, the debate regarding authorship, including the definition, eligibility and order of authorship or contributor, as well as honorary authorship and ghost authorship never stops, 1 especially as multidisciplinary cooperation has become increasingly common in almost every aspect of scientific study and in the rush for publication glory. Identification of function and importance of various roles as well as the lead scientist for a particular segment of research becomes unclear in a multiple co-authorship publication. Thus, raising a long-standing concern that the names that appear at the top of an article does not reflect its true authorship. 2 Authorship confers several benefits such as professional advancement, social status and personal gratification. In academia and research organizations, authorship is testimony of scholarship and expertise besides serving as a measuring stick for individual promotion and tenure decisions. 3 In earlier times, scholars wrote and published their research findings so that the information regarding new findings was disseminated to other scholars or members of society, or as a means of acknowledging others in their various fields of 1
