2018, Indian Journal of Social Research

The purpose of the study was to investigate the patt erns of relationships between mental health status and job satisfaction among male and female civil police personnel. Police personnel (N=350, male=248, female=102) were surveyed in seven district (Varanasi, Mirzapur, Allahabad Lucknow, Sitapur, Barabanki and Bhadohi) in the state of Utt ar Pradesh in Republic of India. Participants' responses were obtained on questionnaires which measured psychological well-being and psychological distress (Heubeck & Neill, 2000) and job satisfaction (Dantz ker, 1993). Data were statistically analyzed for examining the hypothesized relationships between the variables among the male and female civil police personnel. Results indicated that age, experience, salary, psychological wellbeing and job satisfaction were signifi cantly diff erent among the male and female civil police personnel. Psychological wellbeing of male participants was signifi cantly, positively correlated and predicted with job satisfaction and psychological distress was signifi cantly, negatively correlated and predicted with job satisfaction of male police personnel only. Psychological wellbeing of female participants was signifi cantly, positively correlated with job satisfaction. Results also showed that age and salary signifi cantly, positively correlated with job satisfaction of male participants and salary of participants signifi cantly, positively predicted job satisfaction. Implication of the fi nding is that police department should concentrate on removing discrepancies in the job conditions of the male and female police personnel. The police department should also pay att ention to reduce, eliminate or modify stress among male police personnel using psychological techniques based on the western model and Indian psychological model, yoga, relaxation and meditational techniques.
