In this study we discuss the distribution of gender exponents in Old and early Middle English based on an analysis of two historical documents (Orosius, Peterborough Chronicle). The gender exponents investigated include demonstratives, adjectives, numerals and pronouns. We analyzed 179 noun phrases from the Orosius and 1,090 noun phrases from the Peterborough Chronicle. While the Orosius illustrates a highly consistent distribution of gender exponents, the Peterborough Chronicle contains substantial variation. As for the Peterborough Chronicle, we can demonstrate that the number of gender exponents that is used in conflict to the Old English gender system increases over time. In addition, we investigate the most important factors responsible for the observable variation focusing on the properties of the head nouns and their referents. Our results show that noun phrase internal and noun phrase external gender exponents behave differently. Moreover, formal properties of the head noun (structural and morphological case, number) are better predictors for gender variation than the properties of the referent (abstractness, degree of individuation).

Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses, 2016
The aim of this paper is to study the sex variable in the use of nominalizations, a well-known marker of scientific register, in scientific texts written in English in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and to delve into whether we can identify differences in the use of nominalizations in the writings of female and male scientists of that time. Semantic Peculiarities of Feminine Derivatives in the Old English Language
Science and education a new dimension, 2020
The article deals with the relationship between semantics and suffixes in Old English. It has been hypothesized that suffixes that form nouns belonging to a particular gender have certain segments of meaning that differ from those of other genders during the same period of language evolution. In order to identify such features, an analysis of feminine derivatives was conducted. The analysis of semantic segments was based on identifying twenty-one semantic segments, inherent in derivatives and their bases. Our findings show that the main semantic segments characteristic of feminine suffixes include abstractions, feelings and traits of character, names of actions and results of actions.
A diachronic-synchronic review of gender in English
2007
Why does man occur more frequently in the English language than woman does?2 Has the expression of gender evolved through the centuries or is it a non-changing linguistic universal? To what extent are inflections and word-formation processes able to convey gender in present-day English? This paper reviews a number of questions which have raised interest among scholars for many years, and which can now be reconsidered from a 21st-century perspective. To this end, the expression of gender is examined and illustrated from Old English to contemporary English to observe the alternatives which language provides and the differences in each of the periods covered. This allows taking a broad view of the state of the art, which seems necessary for an understanding of how biological sex can be expressed in the English language.
