The relation between air transport and selected aspects of the regional economy
2012
In articles already published in 2010-11, the authors clearly defined and specified the relationship between the existence of the airport in a particular region and the regional economy. This delineation was based primarily on studies conducted by professional groups of companies operating in the aviation industry and the leading associations. This article aims to expend on previous research and presents the results of empirical research, which confirms originally formulated relations. With the aim of verifying the formulated hypotheses, diagnostic missions have been applied to the international airports in Brno, Bratislava and Karlovy Vary in order to obtain primary data. Subsequently, interviews with operational experts from the airport have been carried out. Furthermore, current evidence has been collected regarding the number of passengers who have checked in observed periods. The authors have also performed an analysis of the horizontal development of staff (internal and external 3) and it is in relation to the number of checked in passengers at airports surveyed.
External Economic Effects of Air Transport Development due to the Liberalization
2021
The paper is devoted to research of the impact of gradual liberalization of aviation market on the country’s air transport industry development and on formation of external economic components of the country's GDP connected to it directly: export and import of air transport services. The study of the relationship between the operation indicators of air transport and formed external economic effects has been conducted using comparative, correlative and regression analysis based on the statistical data of Ukraine, which has its own air transport industry and is on the path of aviation liberalization. A strong dependence of the export of air transport services on the total number of international flights and its passengers was revealed. This determines the feasibility of tracking the external economic effects in the design of changes on directions and means of further development of country's air transport sector.
Air transportation usage and economic activity are interdependent. Air transportation provides employment and enables certain economic activities which are dependent on the availability of air transportation services. The economy, in turn, drives the demand for air transportation services resulting in the feedback relationship between the two. The objective of this work is to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between air transportation and economic activity. More specifically, this work seeks to (1) develop a feedback model to describe the relationship between air transportation and economic activity and (2) identify factors which stimulate or suppress air transportation development. To achieve these objectives this work uses an exploratory research method which combines literature review, aggregate data and case study analyses.
Today, the economic and social effects of the airports on the region they are located are widely accepted throughout the world including Turkey. In developing countries transportation sector is a significant tool of development. Since millennium there has been a great growth in the number of people who prefer air transportation in Turkey. The decrease in the cost of the transportation of both passengers and freight in air transport leads the increase of its accessibility. In this concept when a region has an active airport it helps to increase the region’s competitiveness and support its economic, social and cultural development. The aim of this study is to analyze whether an active airport and its traffic frequency have an effect on country’s macroeconomic indicators. In this study region - fixed effect and two stage least square (2SLS) models are applied with using panel data for 26 sub-regions at NUTS 2 level in Turkey period of 2004 - 2011. The results of this study support that increasing in number of active airports and its traffic frequency have a positive effect on regional economic growth
Evaluation of Air Transport Benefits for the Czech Republic
2021
The article’s main purpose is to describe the proposed Methodology, which aims to present an approach to expressing the value of the air transport industry in the Czech Republic. This approach methodically divides the primary and secondary effects and finds metrics based on which the value of the air transport can be quantified. The proposed approach is based on equivalent methodological materials by ICAO, FAA, and other organizations describing and analyzing the value of air transports. The calculations are based on open data sources as well as data that are available by request. The methodology also proposes collecting new data to complete the picture of the value of air transport.
International air transportation and economic development
Journal of Air Transport Management, 2000
Legislation in 1977 and 1978 effectively deregulated the US domestic air cargo and air passenger transportation industries. International air transportation, largely as the result of the 'Open Skies' initiative from 1979 has also gradually been liberalized but progress has been geographically and temporally uneven. This study is concerned with extending the Open Skies concept and in accessing the benefits to the US economy of removing the remaining impediments to the provision of free market services involving, in particular, the full transatlantic market. It initially reviews some of the previous work that has looked at links between industrial location and the quality of international air transportation. It develops a modeling framework to examine the implications of further liberalization on the economies of US regions that currently have limited international services. The work involves both a macro analysis of the impact of European international services for 41 Metropolitan Standard Areas and a micro-analysis looking at the developments over time at a smaller number of airports and their surrounding regions.
Studies in Business and Economics, 2018
The aim of this study was to empirically examine the development of air transport in Turkey in the period between 1980 and 2015. The study intended, within its scope, to determine the developments experienced in air transport in Turkey and the probable causes of the structural changes. Moreover, it was aimed at highlighting the years in which the structural changes in air transport were realized. In line with this objective, the one-break Zivot Anderews (1992) unit root test, the two-break Clemente-Reyes (1998) unit root test, and the one-break and two-break LM were applied to the domestic and international air transport data of the 1980-2015 period. The results of the study show that there were substantial economic and political developments both at home and abroad in the years that the significant structural breaks that affect air transport took place.
Competition and Cooperation on European Southeast Air Transport Market
Social Science Research Network, 2013
Regional Air Transport Market of Southeast Europe is becoming affected by all modes of increasing competition. This Paper will consider the different levels of achievements in traffic results of air carriers and airports of the Southeast Europe including macroeconomic analyses of 11 countries belonging to this the region. They represent more than 30 carriers and almost 40 airports. The year 2007 and 2008 saw high increase of the passenger and cargo carried within the region. More than 30 million passengers were carried and almost 84,000 tones of freight and mail. On 19 primary airports of the Southeast Europe it was carried more than 29 million passengers which is increase of 33 percent compared with the year 2006. Under above-mentioned increase, it is important to emphasize that the growth of airport handled passenger on new born EU countries Bulgaria and Romania was extremely high. Paper will also analyze categorization of the airports according to EU documents and directives. The future development under the new economic circumstances means also adjustments of business models that have been implemented. It also means necessity to cooperate and find out efficient mode of integration which will follow air traffic and legal framework of the EU. Positive example can be implementation of PSO (Public Service Obligation) for air carriers of the Southeast Europe network. Another challenge is capability to provide and realize privatization process for some of the most successful air carriers. The paper will also consider the air traffic forecasts of the Southeast Europe region, which will follow expected implementation of improved model and benefits for the population and economy of 11 countries.
Economic Effects and Invasion of Low- Cost Carriers on the Bulgarian Air Market
Canadian Institute for Knowledge Development (CIKD)
Low cost aviation carriers already occupied a significant share of the Bulgarian aviation market for passenger transportation. The reality is that, thanks to the emergence of lowcost carriers, the number of passengers transported through airports is increasing. This, of course, is due to the low transportation prices offered by these carriers. The availability of such prices is related to the measures taken to reduce the operating costs and the successful tariff management policy achieved by the carriers. At the same time, some non-market methods are used to de facto subsidize the activity of carriers. Some intentions are declared or already established for setting up development funds for airports that redirect public funds to the carrier. The state approves airport charges that are lower than the actual costs of covering the fees in order to attract cheap operators. Tax relief is introduced for airlines that do not benefit from these concessions and take unfairly allocated airport charges for all carriers. The present report analyzes the policy related to the activities of low cost airlines on the Bulgarian market, including examples of dumping, inconvenience for passengers related to the step between the seats (quality of service that is due to low prices, something no organization or institution protects). Some suggestions and proposals are given in order to solve the raised problems.
