The Struggle with Inequality

2021

This is an introductory textbook of the history of economics of inequality for undergraduates and genreral readers. It begins with Adam Smith's critique of Rousseau. The first and second chapters focus on Smith and Karl Marx, in the broad classical tradition of economics, where it is believed that there is an inseparable relationship between production and distribution, economic growth and inequality. Chapters 3 and 4 argue that despite the fact that the founders of the neoclassical school had shown an active interest in social issues, namely worker poverty, the issues of production and distribution became discussed separately among neoclassicals. Toward the end of the 20th century, however, there was a renewed awareness within economics of the problem of the relationship between production and distribution. The impossibility of equality in the Capitalist system: A theoretical solution

This study provides theoretical implications to economic and social behaviors, and the possible theoretical solution to impossibility of equality in the Capitalist system (market system) . This means that within a capitalist democratic system, sameness of opportunity and human wellbeing are impossible. This is not only for a single country, but for all People who live in the “capitalistic mode of production and reproduction of life” . We want to show that the capitalist system (in democratic societies) continually produces inequalities. This is true for every productive cycle: capitalism produces unequal wealth. Impossibility of equality doesn’t only mean that individuals cannot be equal in wealth. But, above all, that in the capitalist system, inequality of wealth can only increase as the “total market” increases. If it is so, the economic policies applied to the current economic theory cannot solve the problem of equality. Therefore, public policies are almost always a naive palliative (or a mystification of reality).

Challenging economic inequality: tactics and strategies

Economic and social inequality is a major problem, implicated in poverty, ill health and exploitation. Inequality has increased in many countries since the 1980s and it is also widely seen as unfair, yet action against it has been sporadic and often ineffective. To better understand why inequality has persisted, it is useful to look at tactics that reduce public outrage over it. These include covering up the existence and impacts of inequality, denigrating those who are less well off, explaining the existence of inequality as natural, necessary or beneficial, using official channels to justify inequality, threatening those who challenge it and rewarding those who defend it. Each of these tactics can be countered, resulting in a set of options for those pursuing a fairer world.
