The moral standing and principles of every organization is a mandate in ensuring its success. Ethics in leadership serves as the main aspect which the organization's leadership plays a role in dealing with duties and obligations that are in tandem with what is regarded good or bad in the society. Morality is the personal decision and behavioral aspect whereas the ethical standing depicts violation and/or breaches of codes which occasion punishment and judgments. Ethics and ethical behavior is crucial in an organization because of the diversity of the people that are working under one business entity. There are various issues that accrue as a result of the diversity and the code in which the organization might have put in place to govern such issues. It is worth noting that ethical issues deal with issues that deal with the behavioral aspect of humanity. Normatively or theoretically, the aim of ethics is the differentiation of that which is right from that which is wrong. The main aspect within an organization, which must be take into account, are the ethical behavior, the normative ethics and ethics. Ethical behavior encompasses the examination of principles of ethics and the problem that accrues owing to the problem and the environment surrounding the scenario ("Business Ethics and Compliance", 2018). With regards to the normative ethic of an organization, there is the elaborate classification of action as to whether it is right or wrong in an attempt to devise a set of rule in which to govern the conduct. Finally in a general point of view there is need to study the principles in which right and wrong is realized. Corporate ethics is set out to govern professionalism and application of business through the examination of problems and principles that are morally inclined to a business environment. There are various avenues in which ethical aspects emanate within the leadership of an organization and it includes the legal aspect of any behavior that is either right or wrong. Ethical issues have become important to leadership and management practice as a result of many well known cases of failure by organizations and individuals to observe and maintain ethical standards. Unethical activities of these organizations have resulted to defrauding of stockholders, consumers and employees, creditors and government to various degrees depending on the nature of the scandal or fraud. In this paper it was noted that organizations and individual have a role to play in ensuring ethical business and individual conduct. Organizations should create ethical environments by providing ethical role modelling and consisted ethical decisions and save workers from ethical dilemmas. Employees on their side should be ethical in thinking and actions to save themselves and their organizations from the costs related to unethical conduct. Whereas ethical conduct is costly and difficult to measure and account, there is evidence of long term benefits as acting ethically builds trust and respect which is necessary for successful long term business and personal success. The solution to ethical and unethical challenges lies within organizations and individuals but leaders have a special role to act as role models and create ethical environments and organizations. Psychological factors, organizational and societal pressures, and a number situational factors make it difficult for people to realize their own ethical aspirations, but we must all try to be ethical in all our undertakings as individuals or corporates because there is evidence of long term personal and corporate gains.

ABSTRACT:The purpose of this article is to review literature that is relevant to the social scientific study of ethics and leadership, as well as outline areas for future study. We first discuss ethical leadership and then draw from emerging research on “dark side” organizational behavior to widen the boundaries of the review to include unethical leadership. Next, three emerging trends within the organizational behavior literature are proposed for a leadership and ethics research agenda: 1) emotions, 2) fit/congruence, and 3) identity/identification. We believe each shows promise in extending current thinking. The review closes with discussion of important issues that are relevant to the advancement of research on leadership and ethics.

Unfavorable effects of unethical treatments and transactions have been under serious consideration both academically and professionally. The question of how to improve ethical sensitivity in decision-making has begun to attract more and more attention. Thus, professionals have tried to consider developing ethical leadership in their organizations substantially, while scholars have begun to study its possible antecedents and outcomes. Emphasizing practical implications of ethical leadership, this study aims to analyze leaders' behaviors based on their ethical decisions, their adoption level of ethical leadership, the degree that they have integrated ethics into their management styles, and their relations with the followers and subordinates. In this respect, authors investigate ethical leadership studies in top organizational behavior journals and categorize these studies according to their implications. Can a leader be seen as too ethical? The curvilinear effects of ethical leadership

Ethical leadership predicts important organizational outcomes such as decreased deviant and increased organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). We argued that due to the distinct nature of these two types of employee behaviors, ethical leadership decreases deviance in a linear manner (i.e., more ethical leadership leading to less deviance), but we expected ethical leadership to reveal a curvilinear relationship with respect to OCB. Specifically, we expected that, at lower levels, ethical leadership promotes OCB. However, at high levels, ethical leadership should lead to a decrease in these behaviors. We also examined a mechanism that explains this curvilinear pattern, that is, followers' perceptions of moral reproach. Our predictions were supported in three organizational field studies and an experiment. These findings offer a better understanding of the processes that underlie the workings of ethical leadership. They also imply a dilemma for organizations in which they face the choice between limiting deviant employee behavior and promoting OCB.

The notion of ethics is central to the study of leadership (Ciulla, 2004). This paper investigates two great and infrequently intersecting streams of thought on the drivers of ethical conduct: the character project that emerges from classical philosophy, and the situational perspective provided by modern psychology. Both are insufficient on their own to inform those who study and practice leadership. Since leadership studies uses an interdisciplinary approach and maintains a strong drive to be relevant it presents an able forum to explore bridges between two seemingly disparate perspectives.
