Correlation between Family Environment and Self Esteem of Adolescents

The present investigation attempted to find out the correlation between the family environment and self esteem of adolescents. The study was conducted on 200 adolescents (100 male and 100 female) studying in various educational institutes located in Bathinda. For data collection Family Environment Scale and Self Esteem Scale were used. For the data analysis various statistical techniques were used. Statistical techniques used were Pearson's product moment correlation and t-test were used. Pearson's product moment correlation was used to determine the correlation between different dimensions of family environment scale i.e. Cohesion, Expressiveness, Conflict, Independence, Achievement Orientation, Intellectual Cultural Orientation, Active Recreational Orientation, Moral Religious Emphasis, Organization and control with the self-esteem of adolescents. The results of the investigation shows that their exist no gender differences in the mean scores of all the ten dimensions of family environment and even no gender differences exist in the mean score scores of self esteem of adolescents. Further co-relational analysis revealed that self esteem is positively correlated to Moral Religious Emphasis and negatively correlated to conflict dimension of family environment. The results indicated a clear correlation between family environment and self esteem of adolescents.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between self-concept, family relationship quality and externalizing behavior problem (aggressive behavior and delinquency behavior) among adolescents in Selangor. Besides that, this study also to determine the level of selfconcept, family relationship quality and externalizing behavior among secondary school students as well as to compare the differences between these three variables according to sex. A total of 400 students (n male =53%, n female =47%) from secondary schools were selected in this study. The multi-stage cluster sampling technique was used during sample selection. Data were obtained from selfadministered questionnaire that are consist of Individual Protective Factors Index Questionnaire (1992), Family Relationship Characteristics (1997), Aggression Scale (2001) and Problem Behavior Frequency Scale (1977). The findings revealed that majority of students have moderate level of selfconcept, family relationship quality as well as externalizing behavior. In terms of sex differences, the results showed that family belief, family structure and externalizing behavior have significant differences according to sex (t= -4.393 to 7.588, p<0.01). Moreover, result indicated that there were negative significant relationship between self-concept, family cohesion and family structure with aggressive behavior (r= -0.210 to -0.153, p<0.01). Moreover, the result showed the negative significant relationship between family structure and delinquency behavior (r= -0.104, p<0.05). These results suggest that self concept and family relationship quality are an importance factors for the development of adolescents behaviors.

Study of Self Concept In Relation To Family Environment among Adolescents

This study examines Self-concept in relationship with Family environment among adolescents. The study involved a total of 137 adolescents in the age group from 17-19 years, Adolescents’s Self Concept Scale – CSCS and CYDS Family Environment Scale was used to measure self-concept and family environment among adolescents. Then the data was scored and statistically analyses by using t-test and correlation. The result of the study revealed that there is no significant difference between male and female adolescents in their self-concept, and also there is no significant difference between male and female in their family environment. There is a highly significant positive correlation between self concept and family environment among adolescents.

Importance of Family Environment in Forming Adolescent Self-Concept

The concept paper will explore the importance of the family environment in the form of self-concept among adolescents. Family environment as one of the social environment that influence the development of self-concept of children, especially adolescents. Values and norms in the individual self that adolescents' self-concept is subject to the extent of the family environment that parents' guide and educate children. The concept paper discusses issues related to the role of parents in the assessment and observations on the development of children, especially adolescents who know the ages of children who have feelings excited to try something new in their life experience. The recommendations highlight the value of affection, closeness and support and encouragement have been presented and discussed thoroughly the issues for discussion and strengthening the relevance of the statement the importance of the role of the family environment in which high self-concept among adolescents.

Self-concept, family functioning and problem type: A replication and extension of a study of clinic and non-clinic adolescents

Method: Thirty-five male and 28 female adolescents who sought help from a school counselor for family problems (n = 26) and for educational problems (n = 37) formed the clinic group. A nonclinic group was formed by adolescents who had experienced the same problems but had not sought help. The two groups were matched in terms of age and sex of respondents. Respondents' were clustered into two groups based on their ratings of family functioning. One cluster was characterised by high conflict, the other by high democratic parenting style and intimacy.

Previous research relating the quality of the relationship with the mother, father, and sibling to adolescent self-concept only investigated social and general self-concept and not various social and cognitive dimensions of self-concept. This study investigated family relationships and their link to the several domains of self-concept. Participating were 77 adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age. The majority were white (85 percent) and from middle-to upper-class backgrounds. Subjects completed the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale; the social support factor of the Network of Relationships Inventory regarding their mother, father, and sibling; and the mother and father affection and control subscales of the Sibling Inventory of Differential Experience. Included for this study were the following Piers-Harris scores: general self-concept, behavior, intellectual and school status, physical appearance and attributes, anxiety, popularity, and happiness and satisfaction. The findings indicated that adolescents who perceived that there was no parental favoritism for affection had higher general, behavior, and happiness and satisfaction self-concepts than adolescents who perceived that they were unfavored. Adolescents who perceived no parental favoritism for affection had higher physical appearance and attributes and popularity self-concepts than adolescents who perceived that they were favored. Females had higher behavior self-concepts and lower anxiety self-concepts than males. The higher the anxiety self-concept score, the lower the number of anxious behaviors. Adolescents perceiving good parental social support had higher general, physical appearance and attributes, anxiety, and popularity self-concepts than adolescents perceiving poor social support. Subjective well-being in school offers myriad benefits for the overall development and well-being of students and is thus crucial. This study examines the effects of the family functioning dimensions of cohesion, flexibility, and communication on subjective well-being displayed by students on school premises. An aggregate of 475 students from five high schools in Greater Jakarta participated in this study. The Brief Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being in School Scale was administered to measure subjective well-being in school. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale and the Family Communication Scale were employed to measure family functioning. The results revealed that family flexibility and family communication positively and significantly affected the subjective well-being of students.
