Lean is about doing additional with less: Less time, inventory, space, people, and money. Lean is about speed and obtaining it right the first time. The Lean manufacturing approach is meant to transform non-value added activity into value added activity. Lean manufacturing has its impact on the employees and also the customers alike. The purpose of this study is to examine how lean techniques are adopted by manufacturing firms in India and their impact on performance. This study gives the opportunity for the application of lean manufacturing techniques in a mix and low volume traditional manufacturing industries. VSM and associated tools are used to explore the opportunities to streamline the flow of products on the floor with a focus on reducing inventory and improving quality. This study has been carried out within the field of lean production. It has been aim to investigate and analyze how a company could implement the philosophy. Lean concept or lean manufacturing is a systematic methodology that identifies and eliminates all types of waste or non value added activities there are components that are considered “waste”. Lean concepts are purely about creating more value for customers by eliminating activities that are considered waste. Any activity or process that consumes resources, add cost or time without creating value becomes the target for elimination.

Today, numerous companies have a major opportunity to reduce their costs and customer lead time and cycle time through the application of Lean Manufacturing System or Lean Philosophy. Implementation of Lean helps to improve their productivity and efficiency. This paper aim to have a brief study on the literature related to lean philosophy in the manufacturing industries and integrate the different lean tool for getting better productivity in different industries. The outcomes from this review is hope justify the needs of further research in area of Lean Manufacturing, aimed at strengthen its philosophy towards more realistic applications. Application of Lean Manufacturing Tools and Techniques: A Case Study in a Manufacturing Industry

Industries of this generation are spending a considerable amount of money in Research and Development sector to invent and discover new technologies that would help them increase their profits. Lean Manufacturing is a manufacturing philosophy that is now being adopted by many of the big industrial giants across the world to improve the current process. This study applies lean manufacturing tools and techniques to an automotive parts industry located in the Gujarat state of India. The current state of the assembly line is plotted using Value Stream Mapping, a tool of Lean Manufacturing. The processes performed in the current state which were not adding any value to the finished product were then selected as opportunities for improvement. Various lean manufacturing tools were then applied to these processes to either eliminate them or reduce their impact on the total production time. After the implementation of these improvements, a Future State Value Stream Map was plotted. It was possible to reduce the total production lead time from 16.39 days to 6.67 days. Also, 160.3% improvement was done in the total production capacity of the company.

Globalization has made this competition fierce & has also helped in developing techniques & methods that are exceedingly helpful for any industry to flourish even in today's times. Lean is one such tool that can be applied anywhere & everywhere in industry. From shop-floor to the top management, lean has proved its mettle. Application of lean reduces the wastes that are produced & also helps in streamlining the production system. It focuses on continuous improvement & at the same time reducing the wastage. Widely used techniques like Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) are a part of lean. Implementation of lean leads to all around development of any industry. This paper discusses comprehensive literature on implementation of lean manufacturing. The case studies considered in this paper includes work of international researchers.
