Medicine Research in India: A Scientometric Assessment of Publications during 2009 – 2018

The purpose of this paper is to qualitative analyse of medicine research output using select scientometric indicators with the aim of identifying top preparing countries, subject subthemes, organisations, authors and journals in the area. The present study has examined 29153 publications in medicine research, the present study deals with the Assessment of Indian medicine research output as reflected in Web of Science (WOS) database for the period 2009 to 2018 for identifying the research output in the field of medicine literature. It also provides a comparative evaluation and performance of different types of scientometric indicators, such as number of publications, number of citations, relative growth, doubling time, activity index and collaboration from India. The Indian medicine research has increased exponentially over the last decade.
Objective: This study analyzes the research activities of India in biomedicine during 2012– 2016, based on the total publication output, its growth rate, quality of papers published and rank of India in the global context. Patterns of international collaborative research output and the major partner institutions of India are also discussed. This study also evaluates the research performance of different types of Indian biomedical and research foundations and the characteristics of published literature in Indian and foreign journals. It also analyzes the medical research output by disease and organs. Materials and Methods: The publication data on biomedicine has been retrieved by using Web of Science (WoS) database. Results: total number of 2712 publications as indexed in web of science database during 2012-2016. The results show that there insignificant growth in Biomedicine literature published from India. It may be researcher, institutions or India’s collaboration with other countries, in all aspects considerable growth can be observed Conclusion: High quality research in India is grossly inadequate and requires strategic planning, investment and resource support. There is also a need to improve the existing biomedical education system, which should foster research culture.
Scientometric study of Research literature output by Madras Medical College during1989 -2018

Madras Medical College is the one of well-known premier medical institution, situated in Chennai. The data was collected using PubMed database during 1989-2018, there are 646 Publications were found. Analyzed for year wise growth shows 53(8.20%) Publications found during 1989-1993 and Highest 283(43.81%) Publication found during 2014-2018 Authorship pattern shows single author have contributed 35(5.42%), multi author have contributed 611 articles, the mean relative growth rate is 0.0835 and mean doubling time is 14.65. Prolific contributed authors rank 1 occupied by Anand Chockalingam contributed 14(2.16%), 2 nd by N, Deivanayagam contributed 13(2.01%),3 rd by Ottilingam Somasundaram contributed 12(1.86%). The mean degree of collaboration is 0.930. the prolific contributed journals by authors rank 1 occupied by The Journal of the Association of Physicians of India have published 46 research papers, rank2 occupied by Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology have published 26 research papers, rank 3 occupied by Indian Journal of Psychiatry have published 20 research papers. The most contributions of research publications by affiliated department 1 st. Department of Dermatology, Contributed 70(9.87%), 2 nd Institute of Mental Health. Have contributed 41(5.78%) research publications, 3 rd Institute of Nephrology. have contributed 40 (5.64%) research publications. The author preferred Language for publication is found to be English, now a days peoples are facing various health problems the postgraduates and faculties should publish their research papers in a Indexed Journals to share their knowledge to the fellow researchers and the funding agencies should encourage the researcher to do their research on current trend on health and diseases.

This part of the study highlights the contents of the published articles in terms of various disciplines or sub-disciplines and the bibliometric aspects discussed in these articles. The analysis of 902 papers published by Indian scholars during1995-2014 indicates that the main focus of bibliometrics/scientometrics is on assessment of science and technology in India in different sub-disciplines including contributions by Indian states and other individual countries followed by bibliometric analysis of individual journals. Papers dealing with bibliometric laws received a low priority as compared to other subdisciplines of bibliometrics/scientometrics. The analysis of data indicates that the share of theoretical studies using mathematical and statistical techniques which were missing in the earlier period (1970-1994) has increased during 1995-2014. The field of medicine as a discipline received the highest attention as compared to other disciplines.

IntroductionBibliometric statistics are used by institutions of higher education to evaluate the research quality and productivity of their faculty. Indian Research Output on Scientometric Literature as Indexed in Scopus: a Scientometric Exploration

In recent decay, the scientometric study is one of the major research areas in scholarly communication. Researchers have conducted their research in the scientometric field from different core subject areas. Using bibliographic records on a scientometric field from the SCOPUS database, this paper tries to give a complete view of the evaluation of Indian research in the domain of scientometric. From 2010-2019 researchers have published 41462 publications out of the 334 number publications belongs to the scientometric domain of Indian research. Researchers have critically analyzed the collected data on various aspects like year-wise publication, author collaboration, authorship pattern, degree of collaboration, collaborative coefficient (CC), leading authors, productive journal, state-wise production in India, and mostly used keyword. The finding of the study disclosed that the maximum number of articles (97) published in the year 2019 with 222 citations. In the year 2015 got the highest number of citations (355) from only 31 publications. The highest number of articles are two-authored (140) followed by three-authored (89) and single-authored (54) respectively, and the average number of authors per article is 2.13. In respect of state-wise production, New Delhi has stood the first position with 191 publications. The word "scientometric" is the most used keyword and the top productive journal is Library Philosophy and Practice (114).

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the productivity of research at the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, in the first eight years (2012-2019) of its establishment. In this study, the authors used a number of Scientometric indices to assess research productivity. The results of the study showed that in the selected period of 2019, most research publications appear with an average growth rate of 46.43%. Most of the comments were written by five or more authors. In addition, R.R. Das is recognized as the most prolific author, and the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research is one of the most popular sources of publications, with the largest number of publications with the help of scientists from AIIMS.

The present scientometric study assesses the publication output of the scientists of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) during 2008 to 2017 as reflected in the Web of Science database to figure out the research performance, scholarly communication behaviour and its citation impact. The scientists of IACS contribute total 4,304 research articles including 22.58 percent international collaborated articles. Further, the publications have been evaluated in terms of year, types of collaboration, authorship pattern, source journals, impact factor, collaborating institutions, collaborating countries and citations. An analysis of 801 papers published in the area of bibliometrics and scientometrics during 1995-2014 indicates a steep increase in the number of papers published by Indian researchers as compared to the number of papers published during 1970-1994. This indicates a growing interest of Indian scholars in scientometrics and bibliometrics. The paper provides several reasons for this steep increase. The main focus of research is on bibliometric assessment of India and other countries followed by cross national assessment and bibliometric analysis of individual journals. CSIR-NISTADS is the top producing institute contributing about one-third (31.4%) of the total output followed by the output of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and CSIR-NISCAIR.
