CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION: A CATALYST FOR NATIONAL INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA

With Nigeria's long history, great natural and human resource endowment, and scientific and technological advancements, one would expect that a stable national integration of the country's society would have been created long ago. However, the current situation in Nigeria suggests that the journey thus far has left much to be desired, and national integration has become a non-issue in national debate. As a result of the country's current challenges, many people have called for secession, while others have advocated for restructuring, and true federalism can be traced back to the country's multicultural makeup. As a result, the goal of this essay is to look at the function of citizenship education in Nigeria's national integration process in order to come up with a solution to the country's current problems. Citizenship education has been defined as the development and production of active citizens who are socially responsible, socially sensitive, socially adaptable, and socially intelligent members of their immediate environment and larger society. The paper concluded by maintaining that true integration would be ushered in by a sincere and intentional commitment among Nigeria's numerous peoples to truthful living and peaceful cohabitation, ushering in a progressive nation working toward long-term development for the sake of current and future generations. Finally, it was recommended among others, that all Nigeria citizens should endeavour to imbibe the culture of accommodating and working with others in a manner that promote national integration and unity.
Obstacles for Effective Implementation of Citizenship Education in Nigeria

Citizenship education is a concept synonymous to some social sciences in Nigeria such as social studies, political sciences etc. As a discipline, it is a new introduction into the curriculum models of Nigeria educational system. It is a curriculum instrument meant to bridge the gaps where other social sciences failed to cover in terms of creating the needed moral and national consciousness among the youths, which equally facilitate sound upbringing of citizens with adequate love and pride for their fatherland. The primary aim of citizenship education is to inculcate in the minds of the youths that habit of “NIEGERIA FIRST”, irrespective of their cultural and religious variations. This paper discusses citizenship education in Nigeria. It considers factors that discourage citizenship participation in civic obligation. The study used historical methodology to elicit and descriptively interpret its data. The primary source includes oral interviews with 11 teachers from 5 secondary schools and 50 students from 5 government secondary schools (federal government colleges, i.e., unity schools) and two (2) tertiary institutions; additionally, educational curricula, gazettes and government papers from the Federal Ministry of Education were also consulted. The secondary source included textbooks, journal articles and newspapers. The historical method was purposively used to descriptively illuminate the impact of citizenship education on the sociology of Nigerian students who are the target of the curriculum. Collecting a range of oral interviews provided rich information and insights into pedagogy by exposing areas of teaching and educative activities necessary to midwife social order, national consciousness and participation The work suggests the adoption of an organic national curriculum on education to expose citizens to civic responsibilities and democratic values. Citizenship education, if prioritized can produce active citizens guided by a common purpose and shared values that are integral to the achievement of national aspiration.
CITIZENSHIP AND THE QUEST FOR NATIONAL INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA
ABSTRACT This paper examined the concepts of citizen and citizenship and its origin in Nigeria.It looked at issues in Nigeria citizenship such as indegeneship, dual citizenship, citizens’ rights and responsibility, loss or termination of citizenship. It considered the methods of acquisition and observed that its citizenship by birth was based on indegeneship rather than place of birth. It established three types of citizens but observed that in practice two broad types existed at state and local government levels which are the indigenes and non-indigenes citizensand citizens’ right were classified on this basis. It also saw that citizens of the major ethnic groups superimposed themselves on the minorities to the extent that some minorities feel like colonized persons and alienated. It also observed that the indigenes had more rights than non-indigeneswho were treated as foreigners outside their home states. It observed that naturalized persons suffered more deprivations than other citizens even by virtue of its constitution of 1999. It observed that issues in citizenship were partly responsible for some inter group crisis in the country such cattle rustling or Fulani herdsmen menace, Niger Delta crisis and the separatist tendencies and state creation agitations. It considered efforts at national integration which have failed not because of bad laws but because extant laws have not been implemented and institution to control enforcement have failed/refused to do their job. Citizens have been given mammoth responsibility and they are expected to help in national development and integration but because of disparity in rights it is doubtful whether citizens who are alienated can give their desired role or full contribution to national growth.
Country Report: Citizenship Education and Curriculum Development in Nigeria
The article highlights the evolutionary trends of citizenship education in Nigeria. The 1914 British amalga- mation of erstwhile Northern and Southern Protectorates gave birth to Nigeria as a state. The disparage ethnic composition of the new state, especially after independence, necessitated finding a common ground to pro- mote committed citizens, against primordial ethnic cleavages and indigenization. It is not therefore surprising that the role of education in fostering national citizenship and consciousness was emphasized. Initially, social studies was used as a curriculum framework, until lately when a new subject, civics, was created in primary and junior secondary schools. The author considers the historical, cultural and political con- text underlining these curricular changes and identifies the current and future challenges face by the imple- mentation of Civics curricular in Nigerian schools.

This study attempts not just the conceptualization of citizenship education and democratic culture, but also examines the roles they play in building the Nigerian state. It therefore, becomes imperative to emphasize the relevance of citizenship education and democratic culture in the 21 st Century Nigeria, owing to the fact that the physical, socio-economic and political environment in which we live clearly puts us at a colossal disadvantage on the knowledge about citizens’ rights and responsibilities. Relying on qualitative method through the use of secondary sources of data collection, the study reveals that it is becoming almost impossible to divorce the potential role of citizens in the task of nation-building in a given political community. Citizenship Education as a Panacea for Political Stability in Nigeria

Nigeria today is grappling with political instability which is due to the socioeconomic and political crisis which pushes the citizens to struggle to protect and promote their interests. This struggle by the citizens is a threat to the political stability of Nigeria. In order to address this prevailing condition, the paper believed that citizenship education is a veritable tool for solving the problem of political instability in Nigeria. The paper adopted descriptive and content analysis method. The paper opined that lack of political stability in Nigeria is due to lack of adequate attention to citizenship education in the country. The aim of this paper therefore, is to examine the role of citizenship education as a panacea for political stability in Nigeria and suggest how it could be realized.
Citizenship Education in Nigeria: For the Young, or the Old
Ignorance is a very serious disease which keeps those suffering from it stunted for life. There is a dire need to socialize the entire citizenry, especially children and the youths, who are the leaders of tomorrow, about the society or the State. The organization of instructions, programmes, sensitization, and training for young citizens in a formal school setting cultivates in them desirable habits, values, behavioral patterns, spirit of nationalism and patriotism that instills changes in the citizens towards productive rewards to the state. Every human being is a citizen of a state, but most people are unconscious or ignorant of this. Some, conscious of it, often expect the state to provide them with every human need, while they shy away from contributing to the well-being of the state, owing to their very poor socialization orientation, or a complete lack of it. Citizens are role players in the society; without concrete and effective socialization, they lack the capacity to effectively function productively as members of their state and beyond. This paper advocates an education that can sensitize, socialize and induct the youths on the need to give up their contemporary retaliatory violent and destructive conducts which is threatening the foundation of Nigeria. Such education and punitive measures to purge the adult perpetrators of official corruption and self-enrichment by embezzling public funds, which can further reform feuding leaders from inciting the youths against their opponents in government will usher in the tranquility all of us are yearning for.
The Concept of Citizenship: Its Application and Denial in the Contemporary Nigerian Society

The Nigerian constitution may have accepted in principle the prominent models of citizenship as well as the factors that determine it but in reality it is denied in various spheres of life. This paper, employing the methods of philosophical exposition and analysis while relying on data from books, journals and current affairs, reviews the concept of citizenship with the objective of determining its practicability or impracticability, application or denial in contemporary Nigerian society. The paper exposed some shortcomings and discrepancies in the application of citizenship in the various confederating states in Nigeria and recommends a strict application of citizenship as it is applicable in other parts of the civilized world and as it is enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.
Exploring Civic Education and Maintenance of Nigeria’s Nationhood in the 21ST Century and Beyond

Nigeria is a country of multi-ethnic nationalities. Since her independence in 1960, Nigeria has been struggling to sustain and maintain her much cherished nationhood though in the face of complexities and challenges of various dimensions. This paper attempts to explore the imperative of Civic Education to the maintenance of Nigeria's nationhood in the 21 st century and beyond. It portrayed Civic Education as an essential tool for sustaining Nigeria's nationhood. A critical analysis of Civic Education in relation to Nigeria's nationhood is made and it was revealed that Civic Education is potent in establishing and sustaining a democratically, healthy and self-reliant Nigeria nation. Considering the relevance of Civic Education in the maintenance of Nigeria's nationhood in the 21 st century and beyond, it should be a compulsory subject/course to be taught at all levels of academic endeavours among others.
