Bioeconomy as a New Phenomenon in Land Grabbing: The Case of Brazil (original) (raw)

Ecological Integrity and Land Uses: Sovereignty, Governance, Displacements and Land Grabs, 2019

Abstract

This chapter is focused on describing some potential pitfalls that are embedded in the concept and practice of bioeconomy, especially in the cases of biofuels production and land grabbing. We analyse whether biofuel production in Brazil is based on the expansion of land used for cropping or on increasing crop yields driven by innovation within the same acreage, which could be characterized as a form of sustainable intensification. We conclude that in the case of Brazil’s bioeconomy, claims that bioeconomy production as such can be assumed as sustainable are questionable.
