The practical need for terminological analysis is obvious. Technical translators spend a considerable amount of their working hours on terminological problems, looking up the meanings of terms they encounter in the source text, checking on translation equivalents, searching for target text related information on syntactic forms, specific conditions of use and appropriate collocations.

Satisfying the communicative expectations of specialized audiences implies, among other things, the use of acceptable terminological units. Information about such discursive peculiarities are therefore of great value to translators. This article discusses a theoretical and practical approach to the study of polylexical terminological units within specialized discourse. The analysis of data from comparable corpora in English and Spanish allows us to identify the most typical terminological phrasemes within a given domain. It is possible to identify semantic and syntactic regularities through information obtained through the ontological notion of phraseme templates . This implies that differences and similarities between patterns from different language pairs -in this case English and Spanish -can be taken into account for establishing equivalent lexical terms for use in translation and even translation strategies in specific communicational settings.

Terminology and translation theory : A functional-pragmatic approach

Sigmund Kvam ABSTRACT In this paper the concept terms covers both the systematic designation of defined concepts within a specific field as well as ‘field specific lexemes in a broader sense’. The object of functional pragmatic translation is text as a communicative unit, representing a specific genre, which again is defined as conventionalized patterns of communication. In this context translation is seen as an interlingual, target group oriented reproduction of a text in a given genre. Within a functional-pragmatic framework terms cannot be translated in communicative isolation, but as structural configurations of onomastic fields to fulfil a specific set of functions in the target text discourse community. This will be demonstrated by means of examples from translations between German, English, Norwegian and Greek. The translation of domain-specific languages and multilingual terminology management

In 2003, in their editorial statement to the periodical Terminology, L'Homme, Heid and Sager pointed out that even though the disciplinary nature of terminology is still a subject of some debate, many people are now recognized as terminologists (2003: 151) 1 . Moreover, specialists who have a background in computer science, linguistics, translation, information science have also shown an interest in terminology theory and in methods for terminography. This special issue of LA, New Series, on the translation of domain specific languages and multilingual terminology management proves these authors' point that terminology is a multidisciplinary achievement, establishing cooperative links with the above-mentioned areas, to which we would like to add knowledge engineering and semantic Web application development. At the same time the contributions to this issue show the potential impact of terminology projects on the quality of translations in a rapidly changing multilingual environment. Terminology remains a research field in full development, striving to keep up with technological innovation. Professional translators will belong to the group of beneficiaries.
A Comparative Study of Terminological Variation in Specialised Translation

This article presents an ongoing project in which terminological variation is studied in the context of specialised translation. The project aims to fi nd out whether certain patterns or tendencies can be derived from a comparative analysis of terminological variation in source texts and their translations. New insights about terminological variation in specialised translations could contribute to the development of a new type of specialised translation dictionary which will better account for the different ways in which a given thought is expressed. In this article, I will present the methodology that was set up in this project to carry out the comparative analysis. Currently, the analysis is carried out on English, Dutch and French texts related to biodiversity issues (including climate change, air pollution, invasive species, etc.).

The work aims at studying how the global tendency of increasing demand for translation services in IT correlates with the situation in Ukraine, the country of a fullscale war; identifying problems of translating IT terms, viewing the main means of reproduction of computer terminological units in Ukrainian language. The analysis of the data from the reliable sources confirmed the first assumption that the number of Ukrainian IT workers has been increasing despite the war in Ukraine. The research showed the discrepancy between growing demand for translating services and lack of competence of translators in the sphere of IT. This leads to actuating the problem of adequate translation of IT terms into Ukrainian. Generally, a term is understood as limitation, restriction or regulation. It was estimated, that IT terms may violate the common interpretation of the concept as being monosemic which is explained by deep penetration of IT in the current life of people. Review of literature in the field of translation of IT terms proved the assumption that borrowings are the main means of reproduction of computer lexical units in Ukrainian. The main types of them include transcoding, tracing, explication, equivalent translation. The dominance of multi-component prepositional phrases in the English language creates certain difficulties in the translation process, this problem is normally solved by tracing with a change in the sequence of the components of the phrase. Affixal, affixless, and lexical-semantic are the most common word formation methods in computer vocabulary. To solve the problem of low qualification of the majority of Ukrainian translators, it is suggested to introduce independent English and Ukrainian language testing of those who obtain bachelor and master degrees in the field of IT.
