Gifted children's skills and learning preferences and how to cater to their unique needs have been tackled in researches in childhood education. Recent studies in the field of gifted education dealt on differentiation in designing curriculum for the gifted, specifically in the field of science, to address this issue. The approach, however, needed further clarification in some countries, where studies on differentiation for gifted education is scarce. The purpose of this paper was to design a differentiated curriculum for gifted children in Grade 1 Science and investigate the implications of the curriculum to the teacher and gifted children. The study was divided into three phases. Phase 1 focused on identifying the needs, interests and learning preferences of each child through survey/interview. Phase 2 involved designing the differentiated curriculum based on the data gathered from the first phase. Finally, the last phase is the tryout of the differentiated curriculum to 27 Grade 1 children from a special science class in one school in the Philippines, but only two of which will be presented in this paper. This phase was done to investigate the observable behaviors of the teacher and the children during the lesson. Aside from the observation, several questions were asked to the teacher and selected children to identify their impressions on the differentiated curriculum. The learning of science became more meaningful, relevant, and interesting to the gifted children. It was observed that teacher successfully engaged and motivated gifted children to the lesson. Several concerns and issues raised by the first--time participants were noted.
The Implementation of Teaching English (Case Study at Islamic Boarding School
Introducing English earlier starts from elementary school is a bright idea, because Learning at young age will be more quickly and effectively than at adult because the child brain is particularly adaptable to language acquisition up to puberty. The writer has objectives concerning the teaching learning process, among other things are: the instructional material, the instructional media, method and technique used, and the students' achievement. This research is qualitative research design, and the subjects of the research are the headmaster, the English teacher, and students. The result of the research has been shown in the research finding and has been discussed that (1) the instructional materials (2) the instructional media is important instrument to be used and interesting for students in teaching learning process; (3) the method used are direct method, total physical respond and grammar translation method, while the technique are songs, and dialogue; (4) the students' achievement score is taken from the first semester examination. Finally, the conclusion of this research is that in holding the English as local content, while the material given, teaching media, method and technique used have been suitable with the theory although those should be improved again.
TEACHING CHILDREN THROUGH SONGS, CHANTS AND RHYMES
Since English has become an international language, more and more people learn English. The importance of English as a world language has made people to learn English as early as possible. Teaching English as a foreign language to young learner needs special approach since young learners have special characteristics, they have their own way of learning. The forms of fun activities for children are songs, chants and rhymes. The main objective of this article is to emphasize the importance of using rhymes and songs in the teaching of English as a foreign language to young learners. Their functions, criteria for election and the ways of presenting them to the class will also be analysed. Songs, chants and rhymes are amazing tool for teaching language, especially to children. Young learners pick up pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical structures, and rhythm of the language.
