Schopenhauer's World: The System of The World as Will and Presentation I
Schopenhaueriana. Revista española de estudios sobre Schopenhauer, 2017
In recent years, the research on Schopenhauer has shown a change in the interpretation of his main work, The World as Will and Presentation, from (1) a normative and linear instruction which guides the reader from idealism to mysticism, pessimism and nothingness to (2) value-free and independent descriptions of the world with all phenomena (like idealism, mysticism, nothingness etc.) in it. Thus Schopenhauer’s main work has become an empirical or baconian approach—something like a «philosophical cosmography»—. this fundamentalchange of interpretation radically puts into question what Schopenhauer means by characterizing his main work as an «organic system». The present paper attempts to give an answer to this question, reviewing the self-reflexive, methodological and metaphilosophical hints which Schopenhauer gives in the first volume of his «World» («as Will and Presentation»).
Arthur Schopenhauer's World as Will and Representation, Volume 2 (CUP 2018)
The World as Will and Representation, Volume 2, 2018
The World as Will and Representation is the major achievement of Schopenhauer’s life, and the backbone of his intellectual career. In 1844 he published a revised and extended edition of it, and now added a whole second volume of ‘supplementary’ essays. It is this second volume, even longer than the first, that we have here in translation. In 1859, the year before he died, Schopenhauer revised both volumes for a final time, making many further additions.
Arthur Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation, Volume 1 (2010)
First published in 1818, The World as Will and Representation contains Schopenhauer's entire philosophy, ranging through epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind and action, aesthetics and philosophy of art, to ethics, the meaning of life and the philosophy of religion, in an attempt to account for the world in all its significant aspects. It gives a unique and influential account of what is and is not of value in existence, the striving and pain of the human condition and the possibility of deliverance from it. This new translation of the first volume of what later became a two-volume work reflects the eloquence and power of Schopenhauer's prose and renders philosophical terms accurately and consistently. It offers an introduction, glossary of names and bibliography, and succinct editorial notes, including notes on the revisions of the text which Schopenhauer made in 1844 and 1859. • A new accurate translation providing the reader with an up-to-date version of the text • Contains substantial introduction, editorial notes, bibliography, chronology and glossary for aiding those new to the subject and also for highlighting the connections between Schopenhauer and other philosophers and philosophical issues • Full editorial notes within the text provide a useful resource to higher level scholars
Schopenhauer's Pessimism: The Trial of Existence
Contrastes. International Journal of Philosophy, 2022
I attempt to present a more holistic and more detailed account of Schopenhauer's pessimistic philosophical premises and their implications. The discussion begins with Schopenhauer's claim that the world is representation and with the discovering of the Will. It continues by examining the implications of the Will, which leads to the argument against existence itself. KEYWORDS METAPHYSICS, THE WILL, SUFFERING, JUSTIFICATION, PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE RESUMEN Intento presentar una descripción más holística y detallada de las premisas filosóficas pesimistas de Schopenhauer y sus implicaciones.

cloth ISBN 978-1-4411-3785-2); $24.95 (paper ISBN 978-1-4411-0434-2) Within recent times there seems to be something of a renewed interest in metaphysics. This is not to say that metaphysics now takes on the same unabashed form as it once did. As thinkers, the metaphysicians of today are far less bold than they once were. Nonetheless, following some three centuries of critique, akin to a parlay upon the field of battle, the critics of speculative thinking in some sense seem to have set aside their arms and become… less certain, I suppose, would be the best expression. Whatever the reason may be for this, the fact of the matter is that today, philosophers seem to be more interested or at least more willing to lend an ear to speculative philosophy.
An Introductory Analysis About the Conception of Death in Schopenhauer
International Journal of Advanced Engineering Research and Science, 2021
This article aims to explain, in a propaedeutic way, the fundamentals about the conception of death in Schopenhauer. Thus, it is dedicated to the book The World as Will and Representation (1966), precisely in these manuscripts: The World as Will, First Aspect: The Objectification of the Will and On Death and Its Relation to the Indestructibility of Our Inner Nature. Hence, this research adopts the following methodological plan: initially it exposes the concept of will and representation regarding the phenomenon of death which throughout philosophical tradition proves to be one of the earliest man's metaphysical anguishes. Subsequently it displays the author's philosophical argumentation in relation to the phenomenon of death that is relevant for understanding all Schopenhauerian philosophy. Schopenhauer (1966) demonstrates this fact, in the discourse about death, as something inherent to man's phenomenal existence that is a manifestation of the will to live. The introduction of the paper should explain the nature of the problem, previous work, purpose, and the Freitas et al.

In Schopenhauer's account of the Will as discussed in "The World as Will and Representation", two potential problems arise. The first potential problem involves the irrational structure of the Will and how it can account for an ordered world. The second potential problem involves originating a desire to escape the Will, when the Will is supposed to be the only thing that drives living beings. I will first explain what the Will is, then follow with a discussion of the problem of structure. Then I will discuss Schopenhauer's remedies for alleviating the sufferings of the Will, which brings about the problem of origin. Though it seems that these concerns would cause serious problems for Schopenhauer, I argue that it is possible they may only be arising from misunderstandings of his writings. 1
