ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KANO MUNICIPAL KANO STATE NIGERIA
Environmental education across all levels of education is being promoted to help stem the decline in the quality of the environment. This study examines the level of environmental awareness among senior secondary school students in Kano Municipal, their perceptions and their responsibility towards improving the environment. The study adopted a descriptive research design, where a questionnaire was administered to students in six senior secondary schools. Results show that 75% of the respondents have been exposed to subjects that have environmental topics and 72.2%, have heard environmental talks at school assemblies. However, school clubs that are pro-environment are not widespread; as their existence was only acknowledged by 38% of the respondents. While about 89% of the respondents hold the right perception that there is a relationship between human activities and the quality of our environment; only about 60% claimed to have observed a decline in the quality of the environment in Kano. Those who would want to take part in a group that promotes activities that improves the quality of the environment account for about 94% of the respondents. To increase greater awareness in the schools, it is recommended that the opportunities that school clubs and school assemblies present for creating environmental awareness should be maximally utilized. Also, teachers should be continuously trained to enhance their ability to transfer environmental knowledge.
