Abstract: The text undertakes the problematics situated between modernity and tradition regarding the reception of H.A. Giroux’s works in Poland, in a view of furthering the study of pedagogy and educational praxis. First, the author outlines the beginnings of openness towards critical pedagogy. What is underscored here is the 1980s’ main inspiration drawn from the resistance paradigm. Then, the author proceeds to the current state of Giroux’s reception in Poland. He illustrates differences among particular examples and levels of the said reception of Giroux’s pedagogy and of the scholar’s theoretical background. The emphasized disputes pertain especially to transcending metaphysics and relativism as a challenge faced by hermeneutical criticism and critical hermeneutics. Additionally, the “critical” horizon of the main handbook of pedagogy used in Polish universities is discussed. The author point to the wasteful efforts at instigating the breakthrough in the reception of critical pedagogy and he exemplifies them by an instance of misbegotten analysis of the allegedly delayed critical pedagogy of work. As a particularly positive example the author presents a new effort at developing critical hermeneutics (and radical praxis) for pedagogy by Andrzej Wierciński. In the concluding part written “in lieu of conclusions,” four lists of critical problems’ dislocations are provided; the problems are both convergent and related to one another, thereby redefining current research objectives and pertain to practical applications in educational praxis. Keywords: critical pedagogy, reception, resistance, reproductio
Reforming the educational system in Poland: The practice-based perspective
Forum Pedagogiczne, 2020
This year's events related to the reform of schooling system in Poland, teachers' strikes and the changes in the Cabinet of Minister of Education have resulted in the national debate on the condition of state education in Poland. In view of this situation raise questions whether it is possible to modify schooling in our country and what is the role of school in the constantly changing reality. An important and interesting voice in the current debate is the book by Anna Szulc Nowa Szkoła (original Polish title; in English: New School; 2019). In this review I will present and analyse the education approach created and successfully implemented by Szulc in her teaching practice through the prism of my parrhesia. The author is an experienced mathematician in a secondary school. She presents her multiannual observations on ineffectiveness of traditional Prussian approach that prevails in Polish schools e.g. teacher's control over students' behaviour and activity during the lesson, excessive testing, focusing on mistakes and showering students with failing grades, transmission of encyclopaedic knowledge, depriving students of their free, afterschool time, unfriendly atmosphere which hampers learning, inhibiting development of key competences, ignoring the latest discoveries on human brain functioning. The observation by Dorota Klus-Stańska (2012, p. 26) that the role of a teacher and the role of a student are school areas in which traditionalism is deeply-rooted, confirms Anna Szulc's insights. Having faced all the above drawbacks and impediments in her teaching practice, A. Szulc demonstrates a proactive and innovative approach. She refers in her book to matters nagging many educators: the new role of school, teachers and students in the contemporary world; grading system; homework; misbehaviour and school climate; the need for changes in Polish schools and difficulties in introducing them. According to the author the contemporary school should become a place that facilitates students' versatile growth and prepares them for life in the future world. The crucial aim of school is thus to educate creative, decisive and responsible young people. The author emphasises an exceptional role of a teacher in this 'new school'. His main job is to create conditions conducive to student learning. Hence the teacher Forum Pedagogiczne 9 (2019) 2, cz. 2
Selected Representations of the Phenomenological Orientation of Polish Pedagogical Thought
Theology and Philosophy of Education , 2023
This article indicates the basic premises and differentiating contexts that underlie the conceptual specificity of phenomenological pedagogy. In this context, three original positions of phenomenological orientation in Polish pedagogical thought have been presented. In accordance with their specific features, the first position refers to the phenomenological problematization of issues related to pedagogical axiology in a particular way, the second position refers to issues associated with pedagogical teleology, while the third relates to matters connected to pedagogical anthropology. Each of these positions is based on original theoretical solutions that have raised interest and initiated discussion on phenomenological pedagogy in Polish literature, beginning in the 1980s.

International Journal of Education and Teaching, 2023
The purpose of this work is to describe and explain the characteristics of pedagogy as a science of education, as an object, concepts and research method. The methodology assumed was the review of the history of pedagogy, especially the classics of pedagogy, those who built it with their experiences in laboratory schools. Here are listed the main concepts of pedagogy, its laws and principles; she establishes the opposition that exists between teaching-learning and education as formation of the personality; she also delimits the fields of the pedagogical method, of didactics or teaching-learning, and the methodology of educational labor that organizes the process and the educational context, the regime and the lifestyle, such as those experienced in the "colonies" or "communes" of children and adolescents, organized and directed by Neill and Makarenko. Since the present article does not derive from a primary source or from field work, as an empirical or experimental research, the results constitute the content of the article, as conclusions.

Historia scholastica, 2021
In my paper, I would like to consider the problem of entanglement of philosophy of education in the communist ideology. I will show it on the example of one Polish concept, created by Karol Kotłowski. He was a disciple of Sergiusz Hessen and developed his own concept of philosophical pedagogy, presenting the philosophy of dialectical materialism, that is Marxism as a perspective in which the entire philosophical thought culminates. Reading Kotłowski, we can see, on the one hand, his rooting in broad philosophical thought, on the other hand – his adherence to the ideology of the socialist state, which demands that education serve the political system and prepare people to be the builders of the system. The theoretical basis for my analysis is Arendt’s concept of totalitarianism and Tischner’s view of homo sovieticus. The analysis is preceded with an historical overview of the situation in Poland in the first decade after World War II with reference to academic pedagogy.
Polish Society in the Face of Contemporary Changes in the Education System
Przegląd Badań Edukacyjnych (Educational Studies Review), 2019
The article discusses the role and significance of knowledge and education in the contemporary Polish society and presents the changes in the national education system from the perspective of successive reforms and their social perception. Particular attention was paid to the last reform of the education system-from December 2016, which since the beginning of work on it has aroused a lot of social emotions and caused controversies and has not ceased to cause them more than a year after it was in force. The authors of the article draw attention to the need to adapt curricula and teaching methods to contemporary realities, but also emphasize the dangers of introducing socially controversial changes to the education system that cause objections among citizens, especially parents of school-age children.
The process of social change and the new imperatives directed to education in Poland
2001
The contemporary scene of Polish social life is the field of occurring dynamic processes of change. In spite of the fact that the origins of a lot of them starts in the event of collapsing of the communist system it is just not enough to analise this reality by the prism of this occurrence but there is a lot of conditions, which indicate the need of engaging the more differentiated terms and conceptions, characteristic for the reality of societies of the perpetual, dynamic changes. Between different situations included in the changing processes important field belongs to the educational sphere. It is possible to indicate there the challenges required by the specific socio-cultural conditions which influence the adaptative strategies of educational sphere and paralelly influencing by this field the trajectories of development of the all spheres (macro-, meso- and microsphere) of society. Following paper establishes a trial of the synthesis of two mentioned above problems: contemporar...
Studies in Pedagogy – Traces of the Past and Future Prospects
2018
1986 is the year when the Academy of Pedagogy at the University of Maribor became the Faculty of Education. Parallelly, an ambition to establish an independent study programme of Pedagogy in Maribor began to grow. This ambition was achieved in 1997, when the first students of the double-subject programme of Pedagogy enrolled at the then Faculty of Education. When the former Faculty of Education split into three independent institutions in 2006, the Department of Pedagogy became part of the newly founded Faculty of Arts at the University of Maribor, and now, in 2017, the studies in Pedagogy in Maribor celebrate their 20th anniversary. At this occasion the Department of Pedagogy at the Faculty of Arts in Maribor organized on 26th and 27th October 2017 a symposium titled Studies in Pedagogy – Traces of the Past and Future Prospects. The former and current PhD students as well as members of the Department and colleagues from the ex-Yugoslav countries were invited to participate. Their p...
