Impact of Security Issues on Pakistan-India Relations: Remedies and Political Advantages

2021

The history of Pak-India relations has presented sound evidences that both states harvested distrust and uncertain conditions with each other after the end of British colonial rule in the sub-continent. Since the partition, both states have contentious issues which added more fuel to both sides' relations. Kashmir issue is a dominant factor that has created more unrest as both states strained into three full-scale wars in this connection. Mutual disputes have also created issues of security and cross-border terrorism which put obstacles during the peace process between India and Pakistan. Concerns about security and cross-border terrorism are counted as a serious constant threat to peace in the South Asian region as both countries have the capability of nuclear war. Pakistan is blamed for Cross border terrorism which is a big matter of concern by the Indian side. India claimed that through cross-border terrorism, Kashmir and the Indian Parliament were attacked with the backing o...

India-Pakistan Relations: International Implications

India's independence in 1947 from the British colonial rule and its subsequent division into two nations – India and Pakistan-has sowed the seeds of continuing conflict between the two countries since their independence. The partition of India was primarily based on the religious divide between the two communities – the Hindus and the Muslims. After India's partition, the major issue of conflict between the two countries has been the Muslim dominated northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, currently a part of India. This bilateral conflict has had international implications over the years. Decades of conflict, which includes three major wars, has contributed to a nuclear race between the two countries and growth of terrorism in the region. These two regional outcomes of the conflict have assumed global significance with the growing international threat of nuclear proliferation and terrorism. The paper analyzes the bilateral conflict between India and Pakistan and the subsequent emergence of the global threats. The paper also emphasizes normalization of the bilateral relations as the key prerequisite to ensure peace and security for the region and also for relieving the global society from the perils of a growing nuclear threat and expanding forces of terrorism.

Theoretical Underpinnings of India- Pakistan Relations

India Quarterly, 2020

The India-Pakistan relations have historically been marked by mistrust, broken promises, unresolved issues and unending conflicts. A number of divisive factors shaped and influenced the nature of this relationship which inter alia includes large-scale violence at the time of partition, perceptual enmity and numerous unresolved issues including Kashmir. Due to all these reasons, the two countries have found themselves locked in a complex situation that could best be described using zero-sum two-person game. The author argues that perceptions play an important role in shaping the nature of bilateral relations. He goes on to identify six different prisms-three each in India and Pakistan-through which one can understand the nature and direction of this otherwise difficult relationship.

The Pakistan-India Conundrum: A Historical Survey

The current research presents an overview of history of bilateral relations between Pakistan and India that have been adversarial since their inception in 1947. The study has also analyzed initiatives such as The Indus Waters Treaty (1960), the Tashkent Agreement (1966), The Simla Accord (1972) and the Lahore Declaration (1999) taken by Pakistan and India to build confidence and lower the intensity of the conflict. However, Pakistan and India have still to do concrete efforts to make their relations as durable and have ability to absorb political shocks like 2008 Mumbai incident. The study portrays Pakistan-India bilateral relationship as pendulum like movement. If they have taken one step forward they have moved two steps backward. However, Pakistan-India relations are moving towards maturity. And, peace overtures like the Composite Dialogue (2004) may have significant impact upon Pakistan-India relations provided that the negotiation process is not disrupted and disconnected. The primary objective of this research is to present an overall view of Pakistan-India relations in the backdrop of irritants that have made Pakistan-India normalization process as hostage to them.

India and Pakistan Relations in 2017 and beyond

As we say good bye to 2016 and welcome 2017, it is easy to feel sad about the sorry state of relations between India and Pakistan. Another year has passed with the two countries stuck in a vicious geo-political conflict. Another year of deaths due to terrorist attacks, cross-border firing and our refusal to let go of the burden of hate we have carried for a long time. Around 900 people in India and 1,800 in Pakistan died in terrorism-related incidents this year alone, as of 25 December, 2016. Another year of precious resources being diverted to bombs, fighter planes, nuclear weapon programs and warships while the two countries remain near the bottom of the table in terms of human development.
