The Use of Corpus in the English Classroom Teaching and Its Impact

English Language Teaching and Linguistics Studies

At present, with the rapid development of information technology, the Internet has been unprecedented popularity, as a language corpus of Internet and information technology products, in language research and teaching, has received unprecedented attention and development, especially in the translation teaching, grammar and vocabulary teaching of university English, for the effect of education and teaching has played an important role. However, the role of corpus in English teaching in secondary schools is not obvious and needs further research. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the application of corpus in the classroom of the secondary school English teaching, so as to better promote students’ learning and improve the quality of education and teaching.

Corpus for Language Teaching: Students' Perceptions and Difficulties

PROJECT (Professional Journal of English Education), 2022

Regarding the seemingly ignored corpus for pedagogical contexts, it is necessary to investigate how prospective English teachers perceive corpus and its use for language teaching. From the description of the perceptions, it is then possible to consider further pedagogical implementation. This study thus examines English Education Department students' perceptions of corpus use for English language teaching in the Indonesian context. There are 31 participants from the fifth-semester students of an English Education Department in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The perception data were collected through questionnaires and interviews after some practice of corpus use. The questionnaires and interviews show that most students perceived corpus positively and found corpus application for language teaching beneficial and essential, albeit unfamiliar with corpus. Due to ignorance, there are some difficulties faced by the students. However, this study shows the advantages of using corpus for teach...

Corpus Linguistics: Pedagogic Application in the 21st Century

International Journal of Academic Research in Progressive Education and Development, 2017

In this digital era, the role of computer technology as a resource for instruction of foreign language learners is increasing as educators recognise the ability of computer technology to produce both independent and collaborative learning environments. Computer technologies, for example the Internet, multimedia, and hypermedia have been introduced in English Language Learning and Teaching (ELLT) to foster language learning process, all of which fall under the category of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Corpus linguistics is a systematic analysis of the actual (real) production of language (either spoken or written), in which texts are assembled using computer technology (concordancer) to form a large collection of authentic texts, called a corpus (plural-corpora) that comes in various sizes. Despite immense research on corpus linguistics in these recent decades, the potentials and limitations of Data-Driven Learning (DDL), the application of corpus linguistics in English Language teaching (ELLT) have not been widely discussed. Hence, this paper aims to review the potentials and limitations of DDL as a means of opening up opportunities for further studies. This insightful information is highlighted as a means of promoting DDL and producing independent learners in the 21 st century classroom.

Corpus‐based language teaching and learning: Applications and implications

International Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2021

The International Journal of Applied Linguistics (InJAL) publishes articles that explore the relationship between expertise in linguistics, broadly defined, and the everyday experience of language. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles which show explicitly how local issues of language use or learning exemplify more global concerns.

Corpus-Based English Language Teaching: A New Method

In this paper, I have made a proposal for using modern English language corpora of both spoken and written texts for ELT activities meant for the Bengali learners. In a short descriptive way, I have tried to highlight some of the characteristic features and advantages of Corpus-Based English Language Teaching (C-BELT), which has been successfully adopted and implemented in many countries where English is being taught as a second language. After I have justified the need for learning English for the Bengali learners in the present global context (Section 2), I have shown how English language corpora become relevant in ELT (Section 3), how these can be utilised as a primary resource in classroom teaching (Section 4), and how these may be accessed as a secondary resource in designing ELT textbooks, study materials, and other resources. This paper is primarily meant for those scholars who are either engaged in ELT activities or are involved in designing ELT resources for the Bengali learners.

Benefits of corpus-based approach to language teaching

Development in electronic and computer sciences have changed the perspective toward language teaching. One of the most crucial contributions of the computer sciences to language teaching has been observed within corpus linguistics in constructing, processing, and analyzing language corpora through computer systems. The term corpora refers to the electronic authentic natural language database(s) available on the Internet or stored in personal computers.

IMPACTS OF APPLYING LANGUAGE CORPUS IN VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

The study investigates the beliefs of English language teachers on applying Language Corpus in vocabulary development of English Language learners in (A2) lowintermediate level of 4 th graders at a private school setting in Turkey. Drawing on a substantial database of concordance in use of language corpus, students' assessments and analysis of corpus based worksheets have been practiced through software concordance. The first part of paper is a brief review of literature that presents some theoretical information on vocabulary development of ELLs and how effective using corpora in language classes as a means of in offering real authentic examples of language stressing lexical markers. The second part of this paper aims to suggest Data Driven Learning (DDL) in order to analyze learners' vocabulary learning process in authentic contexts whereas the last section of this research paper indicates how using language corpus affects the vocabulary development of L2 learners.

Corpus Linguistics in Teaching, Learning, and Research

Aleph: Langues, Médias & Sociétés, 2022

The relevance of corpus linguistics in language teaching and learning has witnessed challenging views in academia. This paper discusses the feasibility of its implementation as an educational, pedagogic, and academic requirement in language education. The claim made here is that corpus linguistics is not merely a globalisation trend, but it may prove an indispensable tool encompassing countless applications for learners, teachers, and resarchers alike even in less technology-based educational contexts.
