The Sport Mental Training Questionnaire: Development and Validation
Current Psychology, 2019
Research in sports psychology has revealed that mental training is essential in the development of successful athletes. This project, comprised of five studies (a total of N = 2015) resulted in a novel approach towards the measurement of mental skills in sport. In Study 1 (N = 797) and Study 2 (N = 405) we used principal component analysis to identify and confirm the structure of a wide range of identified sport mental skills. Study 3 (N = 429) and Study 5 (N = 330) confirmed factorial structure of Polish and English versions. Study 4 documented how both versions of the scale were developed, and how these two versions converge supporting their cross-cultural validity. The final version contains 20 items grouped into 5 subscales (foundational skills, performance skills, interpersonal skills, self-talk and mental imagery). The Sport Mental Training Questionnaire is a reliable and valid brief questionnaire that will facilitate psychological evaluation of mental preparation among athletes.

Sport psychologist needs to understand how psychological factors affect athletic performance of an individual, considering individual differences among athletes. Each specific problem in working with athletes must be considered depending on complex factors: the type (specificity) of sport ; characteristics of the activity (the training or competition) ; stages of athletes’ sports development ; gender and age differences, etc. Although there are numerous psychological instruments, which assess psychological characteristics of athletes, it is important to select instruments adjusted to athletes, working style of sports psychologist, available time and other constraints. Here, we have formulated a preliminary version of our own battery of questionnaires, named Multidimensional Inventory of Sport Excellence (MUSI), selecting the items for following psychological characteristics: energizing, maintaining attention, directing attention, wide internal / external attention and narrow interna...
THE EVALUATION OF MENTAL ABILITIES OF ATHLETES IN DIFFERENT BRANCHES
This paper aims to evaluate the levels of mental ability of licensed athletes who are actively engaged in sports at branch level in Turkey. A total of 340 athletes, including 116 women and 224 men, from various regions of Turkey who are actively engaged in sports at elite level in different branches voluntarily participated in the survey which evaluates their levels and techniques of mental training. It was considered important that athletes participated in the survey should be licensed and importance of the study was emphasized to them. The survey model was used in this study. Current information related to research problem was systematically given by scanning of relevant literature, so a theoretical framework on the subject was created. First of all, a twelve-question personal information form developed by researcher was applied. Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment tool (OMSAT-3) which is developed by Durand-Bush, Salmela and Green-Demers (2001) and adapted to Turkish language by Erhan, Güler, Ağduman and Gerek was applied to evaluate the levels of athletes’ mental ability. In the adaptation phase, the scale was applied to 220 athletes and internal consistency value was found to be 0.94. The scale consists of 48 items and 12 subscales and these subscales are evenly divided into four items. The scale consists of a total of 48 items and constructed on a 7-point Likert-type. The scoring was formed from 1 to 7 according to the statements, “Strongly disagree”, “Disagree”, “Slightly disagree”, “Neither agree nor disagree”, “Agree”, “Slightly agree” and “Strongly agree”. Frequency Analysis was applied to determine the demographic characteristics of participants and Shapiro-Wilk Test was applied in order to decide whether the questionnaires are suitable to normal distribution and Mann-Whitney U test was applied in order to determine the dimensions according to parameters such as gender, marital status, and type of sports, level of contact and level of sport. Kruskal-Wallis H test was applied for analysis of the dimensions in terms of age, sports age and educational level. Finally, correlation analysis of Spearman was used in order to determine the relation between sub-dimensions of total satisfaction score. The significance level (p<0.05) was accepted in analysis. As a result, there is a significant difference in mental ability dimensions of active athletes in different branches according to their mental ability levels and variables such as age, type of sports, sports level and sports age. Therefore, it is observed that mental ability levels of athletes in different branches vary according to these variables.

The Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS-R5) that stands for Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports is one of instruments in measuring six psychological aspects of an athlete in sports settings. Such instrument has been used differently with inconsistent findings, items used, target subjects, etc. This study aims to reveal the extent of factor analysis of this instrument when it applies to different subgroups of 295 Indonesian national athletes. It also intends to ensure which statements are consistent with the psychological aspects measured through assessing reliability and validity. The collected data were quantitatively analyzed to obtain information about construct validity and reliability. After data collection through the PSIS-R5 instrument, they were then analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Descriptive statistics, including means, and standard deviations were initially calculated and subsequentially identified the extent of psychometric characteristics of the instruments studied and the application of Alpha Structured formula, KMO and Bartlett’s Test. Results showed the PSIS-R5 instrument to be composed of five factors with values of 45.325%; to be in the reliable category of Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient for self-management, motivation, and psychic readiness factors. However, it was not in the reliable category for failure/defeat thought and team management, but the good category in the stratified alpha reliability.
Requirements to validate a sport psychosocial assessment questionnaire
2011
This aim of this study was to verify the possibility of validation of a questionnaire of the coach behaviours. Athletes modify themselves due to the coach behaviours, but also, that the coach can be influenced by the relations that establish with his athletes. Thus, in one sport team, the emotional states and the coach’s behaviours influence the satisfaction of the athletes and, therefore, its performance. In this study 140 participants (n=140) of both sex, practitioners of collective sports, had participated. After the application of the questionnaires, one exploratory factor analysis, was done, in way to group the several items in relation to the factors that constitute the contents. The results show an apparent validity, with KMO and a Barllett’s Test of Sphericity of 0.805 for a X 2 =1203.979 with 153o of freedom, being this value enough for the analysis of the main components. The construct of a test can only be validated if it can really put theory into practice. These behavio...
The main goal of this study was to reveal the basic psychometric properties of the imported Dutch Youth Version of the Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS–Youth), applied on Croatian samples of athletes, to establish the relationship among different psychological skills, to find the differences in psychological skills between trainers and recreational table tennis players, as well as according to the education level. Role and Benefits of Sports Psychology for the Improvement of Performance of Sports Persons
International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022
The acceptance of sport psychology, both as an academic discipline as well as an applied process, has grown considerably over the past 2 years. Sports performance is determined by a combination of physiological factors, technical skill, tactical insight and state of mind. Every top sportsperson knows that their best performances come from their mind as much as their body. Not many to the world of competitive athletics would argue with the significance of being psychologically ready just before an athletic competition along with the want to help keep this specific mindset during a competitive competition. As a result, the goal of this report is actually providing the viewer with a basic framework depicting how mental skills education translates into enhanced competition efficiency. This particular framework is meant to help bridge the common "understanding gap" that's presently being described by a lot of coaches and athletes, while simultaneously helping sport psychology practitioners market their valuable services to specific athletes & teams. The paper concluded by stating sport psychology must be used as scientific instruction ways for athletes to be able to improve sports performance.
