THE NEXUS AMONG UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND CRIME IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA
Reality of Politics, 2022
Unemployment and poverty have been the major causes of crime in developing countries, Nigeria inclusive. The main objective of this paper was to show the connections among unemployment, poverty and crime in Nigeria. It also examined unemployment and poverty rates in Nigeria. The research design adopted for this paper is cross-sectional and explanatory. The paper adopted conceptual framework to show the nexus among the concepts. It used secondary sources of data collection and data analysis was based on content analysis. The study revealed that there is a strong link between unemployment, poverty and crime in Nigeria. The relationship among the concepts is bi-directional. Unemployment has adverse effect on poverty and crime rate. So also poverty negatively affects unemployment and crime rates. Increase in crime rates leads to increase in unemployment and poverty. The paper therefore recommended amongst others that the rate of unemployment must reduce if poverty and crime must reduce. Also the rate of unemployment can be reduced through provision of jobs which will consequently reduce the rate of poverty and also make crime unattractive on the long run.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND CRIME: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA
West African Social and Management Science , 2023
The paper evaluated the nexus between youths' unemployment, poverty and crime rates in Nigeria between 1985 and 2021. The paper utilized various statistical and econometric tools, including the vector autoregressive model and the Toda Yamamoto granger causality. The results of the estimation exercise revealed that youth unemployment significantly increases crime rate. This was further reinforced by the Toda Yamamoto granger causality test which identifies a bi-causal relationship between youth unemployment and crime in Nigeria within the period under review. Youth unemployment was also observed to have a significant positive influence on poverty, as further strengthened by the Toda Yamamoto granger causality test which indicated bidirectional causality between youth unemployment and poverty. Finally, the estimated VAR results showed that poverty had a significant relationship with crime, as well; the Toda Yamamoto granger causality indicated that poverty granger causes crime at the 10% level of significance. The results further indicated that there exists a unidirectional causality between the variables (moving from poverty to crime). The paper thus recommends that government should have a deliberate policy to create more jobs for the teeming youth population. The establishment of industries that are labour intensive that will absorb the unemployed youth population would be a potent strategy aimed at reducing the rate of unemployment, and invariably crime and poverty in Nigeria in the nearest future.

Poor Education and Unemployment Implications for Youth Crimes in Nigeria
International Journal of Criminology and Sociology, 2020
Research on the correlation between education, occupation and criminality among the youth has grown both in length, and complexity in the last two decades. Using a mixed-method analysis, this study concurs that educational and occupational variables are significant determinants of criminal propensities but maintains two sides of the same coin by contending that the level of educational attainment of the youth does not grossly influence their involvement in criminal activities, whereas it draws on occupational attainment as a strong factor for the pervasive involvement of youth in criminality. Taking evidence from Nigeria, the study recommends policies that will review and implement youth entrepreneurial development, educational re-orientation and creation of more job opportunities, as a life-changing instrument against crime.
Youths’ Unemployment and crime in Nigeria: A nexus and implications for national development
Crime is a phenomenon that is bedeviling various countries across the globe in varying degrees as it affects policies and development. Any nation striving towards development must reduce the frequency of crime to the barest minimum. In recent years in Nigeria, there has been an upsurge in the frequency of crime committed. This has led to palpable fear among the populace as security of lives and properties can no longer be guaranteed. The phenomenon of crime has impacted negatively on the economic, social and political life of the nation over time. The youth population of any nation represents the driving force for development. However, for the youths to become useful resources, they must be gainfully employed. The youths are also the most volatile when their energies are misdirected or channeled into wrong endeavours. Available data show that youth employment is very rampant in Nigeria and this has contributed immensely to their involvement in criminal activities. The paper argues that criminal activities such as armed robbery, kidnapping, political thuggery, militancy and other social vices found among the unemployed and jobless youths have contributed greatly to the slow pace of development in Nigeria. The paper proffers that addressing youths' unemployment will stem the tide of crime and foster rapid development in Nigeria.
