The study examined the effects of Strategic Planning on Corporate Performance using University of Ibadan as the case study. It further probed into how this has impacted on the management efficiency and effectiveness as strategic planning is essential in corporate organisations. Primary data was used for the study. The study made use of questionnaire to elicit information from employees of University of Ibadan. Data collected were analysed using inferential statistics. The hypotheses were tested using the using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to establish the significance of relationship between the various variables used in measuring performance. Application of Strategic Planning Process In University Management: A Study Of Universities In Anambra State Of Nigeria

Nigerian University system is bedeviled with many problems that have hindered her from making the educational systems responsive in the context of rapid technological advancement. The application of strategic planning process may provide necessary direction, focus and cooperative involvement of all stakeholders in the universities’ programs and operations. This study was aimed at determining the extent of application of strategic planning process in the university management and whether application is influenced by university ownership (Public or private). The study adopted a survey design. Out of 580 senate members of the five public and private universities in Anambra State, 310 were selected through stratified random sampling technique. The study was guided by two research questions. A 31-item questionnaire organized into six major strategic planning processes was set to collect relevant data for the study. Out of 310 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 295 copies were duly filed and returned, representing 95% return rate. Data collected were analyzed and the research questions were answered using means and standard deviation. The findings revealed that all the universities irrespective of ownership applied strategic planning process in managing the institutions except in the implementation and assessment of strategies and plans. However, private universities seemed to implement strategies and plans while public universities did not. Based on this finding, it was recommended among others that the National Universities Commission (NUC) should set up machinery to monitor the proper implementation of all aspects of strategic planning process to ensure that the goals, mission and vision of the universities are achieved for the purposes of an academic excellence.

The study sought to examine the influence of strategic management practices on the performance of private universities in Kenya. The study targeted 30 private universities in Kenya both chartered and those with the letter of interim authority. THE ROLE OF STRATEGIC PLANNING ON THE PERFORMANCE OF HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS

The growing difficulties experienced by many Universities during the 1970s led to the adaptation of strategic planning as a potential solution for developing a proactive framework to cope with the changing demands and declining resources. After adaptation of strategic planning in 1994, the University of Dar es Salaam despite attaining tremendous achievements such as increased enrollment, research and publications, new postgraduate and undergraduate programmes, and launching of the international standard library, it still faces several inefficiencies, major ones including weakness in information management systems, financial and asset management systems, and inadequate number of staff in some areas. This study was conducted to assess the role of Strategic Planning on the performance of Higher Learning Institutions taking the University of Dar salaam as the study organization. The study outlined the factors that gave rise to strategic planning, evaluated the strategies employed in the planning and implementation of the UDSM Strategic Plan, and analyzed the effects of the strategic planning on the performance of the University of Dar es Salaam. The study employed document review, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and observations as data collection methods. Content Analysis and Narrative Analysis were the data analysis methods. The key findings of the study reveals the economic reforms of the second political regime in Tanzania which gave rise to the need of strategic planning in 1994, formulation and approval process of strategic planning, the implementation strategies, as well as the outcomes such as significant improvement in student enrollment, and the challenges of implementing the University Strategic Plans such as a low sense of ownership among UDSM staff. The study concludes that strategic planning is a platform for improving the University of Dar es Salaam’s performance, and recommends effective communication, and more participation.

EFFECTS OF STRATEGIC DECISIONS ON PERFORMANCE OF KENYAN UNIVERSITIES

The university education sector is becoming very competitive due to changes in the business environment. In order to be successful strategic decisions are a key to improving performance of universities. The purpose of this study is to establish the effects of strategic decisions on performance of universities in Kenya. Systems theory provided a theoretical basis for the study. The study adopted explanatory – cross sectional survey research design. Respondents were selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. A questionnaire was used to collect primary data. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as means and standard deviations were used, while in inferential statistics, structural equation modeling was used for model specification and hypothesis testing. The study unveiled that strategic decisions have a significant effect on performance of universities. The study concluded strategic decisions positively influence performance of universities. Top management in universities should make strategic decisions that have a positive long term effect on performance of universities. The study recommended that top management should evaluate all strategic decisions before implementation and also a further research to be conducted in other sectors to test the conceptualized model.

FACTORS INFLUENCING IMPLEMENTATION OF STRATEGIC PLANS IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN KENYA: A CASE STUDY OF JOMO KENYATTA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY

The Government of Kenya has adopted strategic planning in various institutions and Ministries to address distinct and prioritized strategic issues in order to upgrade service delivery and bolster employee and institutional efficiency. Institutions of higher learning and more so the public universities, have in the past years been adhering to this law by setting strategic plans and implementing them in the institutions. For instance, the JKUAT 2013-2017 strategic plans and UON 2013-2017 strategic plans to mention just but a few. The objectives of the study were to assess whether managerial support, resource allocation, performance appraisal system and organizational culture constitute factors affecting the implementation of strategic management plans in public universities in Kenya. The study focused on the Public universities in Kenya with a case study of JKUAT. Data was gathered through a structured questionnaire which was pre-tested on a 10% sample randomly selected from the study population to ensure reliability and validity of the tools. The data collected in the descriptive research design was analyzed by use of statistical package software for social sciences, SPSS. The stratified sampling technique was conducted to select the sample. These strata were; administration, teaching and non-teaching. The sample was composed of 100 respondents. The results were presented using tables. Multiple Linear Regression analysis was used for inferential analysis. The results revealed that all the variables had a positive and statistical significance effect on the implementation of strategic plans in public universities in Kenya. The study concluded that all the variables significantly affected strategy implementation in public universities in Kenya. Therefore, it was recommended that the universities should implement a management support system, increase resources for strategy implementation including hiring competent staffs and offering regular training the existing employees to ensure that they are updated on the new principles of management.

Quality education is the focus of every country and effective, strategic management techniques offer a sound foundation for developing any educational complex's road map for success in education. The focus of this study is to access the strategic management practices of 378 participants from fifteen selected private schools and how it affects their performance in the Accra metropolis, Ghana. Data were collected using a self-administered drop-and-pick questionnaire, and descriptive and inferential statistics were primarily used to evaluate the results such as frequencies, percentages, exploratory factor analysis and facilitated by SPSS (version 26). The primary findings were that three main components were extracted. Overall, three main strategic practices were identified to influence institutional performance, core competences of the school at various strategic management levels, so that certain schools choose a distinct strategy for strategic management practices., good client relationship and cost control policy. The findings of this study contribute to knowledge, raise awareness, and define the framework and principles of strategic management. Additionally, the findings are helpful for schools and the ministry since they may be utilized to strengthen how strategic management is implemented, which will increase performance.

The Effect of Strategic Management Practices on the Performance of Universities in Turkey

In the present study strategic management practices of the universities in Turkey were investigated and the effects of these practices on the performance of the universities were analyzed. The research investigated whether strategic management processes were implemented in universities in Turkey or to what extent they were implemented and the effects of these processes on the performance of the universities tested by means of a model which was developed. Concrete suggestions were made depending on the results. In the study, it was concluded that the universities operating in our country did not closely follow the changes and developments mainly about higher education in Turkey and in the world and that they did not pay enough attention to the competitive conditions and use strategic management practice adequately.
