Abstract
The Attic white-ground crater of the Phiale Painter (440 BC), exhibited at the Archaeological Museum “Pietro Grif- fo” of Agrigento is an artifact of great refinement. It depicts the myth of Perseus and Andromeda and it is very in- teresting for both the iconography and the painting technique generally documented on lekythoi and smaller vases. The present interdisciplinary research has focused on the painting technique of this crater and was conducted directly in the Museum by means of non-invasive and non-destructive spectroscopic techniques (x-ray fluorescence and TR- FTIR). The study, of which we present here the preliminary results, intends to define the nature of the white ground and pigments (second-white, red, black with brown and orange) and the technique of realization of the vase.
