Libraries and Canon-Formation: the Case of English in the Collections of the Library of the Faculty of Humanities, Lisbon University

The International Journal of the Book, 2013

The project for researching the role played by libraries in canon-formation (namely through their policies regarding the creation, organization, preservation, and utilization of the collections) will be presented and discussed. We selected the Library of the Faculty of Humanities, Lisbon University, a modern academic library, created in 1859, by royal decree of D. Pedro V, following his canonical choice. Actually, the two contemporary rulers of new Britannia—Prince Albert, his cousin, and Queen Victoria—held this king in high consideration for his outstanding contribution to Portuguese modernisation. Representing various fields of study, the collections were decisive to canon-formation in the Faculty of Humanities. Thus, we have been trying to answer the following questions: who has been creating, organizing, preserving, and utilizing the collections, from the mid-nineteenth century onwards? When, where and how? Presently, we are studying the collections in English, namely the works belonging or referring to the long nineteenth century. Richard Garnett’s “The International Library of Famous Literature” (London, 1899) is our first case-study. The anthology determined the Western literary, cultural and visual canon at the turning of the century, as evidenced by comparing it to the Portuguese and Spanish editions, published at the beginning of the twentieth century.

'A Conceptual Approach to Library History. Towards a History of Open Science', Quaerendo 46 (2016) 205-221, doi 10.1163/15700690-12341355

This article argues that Library History ought to be guided by well-contextualized questions of cultural history. It proposes one such question: that which asks after the ways in which repositories of knowledge were created, organized and used in the past. The examples that are discussed in this article suggest that within the social context of the Republic of Letters an ideal of sharing knowledge was developed, which informed later, eighteenth-century, attempts at making repositories and libraries widely available. Modern ideals of collecting and sharing knowledge are not as new as they would appear to be. This is to say that the ideal of 'Open Science' has a history.

Researching the Modern Jesuit Library: A Case Study from Portugal's Campolide Library

Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu, 2022

Founded in the 1850s, the library of the Jesuit College of Campolide, in Lisbon, was pillaged and scattered in the wake of the country’s Republican revolution in 1910. After a decade of litigation over its property, the remnants of the Jesuit library were incorporated in the collections of the Portuguese National Library. Despite being the Francisco Malta Romeiras, The Modern Jesuit Library most celebrated boarding school in late nineteenth-century Portugal, the absence of a catalogue prevented historians to study the library until now. The tracking of hundreds of copies at the Portuguese National Library has recently allowed me to sketch a partial reconstruction of its collections and to study them in the broader context of science and education in "A Biblioteca Erudita de Campolide: A história de uma biblioteca jesuíta dispersa pela República" (Cascais, 2022). This article summarizes the main findings of this research and presents it to a wider international audience. Despite its limited scope, I argue that the Jesuit Library of Campolide provides an excellent case-study to understand the practices of Catholic librarianship from mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century.

Raluca Trifu - Istvan Kiraly V. : Philosophical, Epistemological, and Scientometric Considerations On the Meanings of Library Science and the Profession of Librarian – Situating a Research Project. In: PHILOBIBLON - Transylvanian Journal... Vol. XVI (2011), No. 1 pp. 245 - 257

Starting from the problematization of the meanings of science and library professions and institutions, the paper surfaces and analyzes from perspectives equally philosophical, epistemological, and scientometric, the premises and conditions which situate – willingly or not – the project of a (any) genuine research which intends to study the Romanian literature on librarianship as it appears in books and periodicals. To this end, earlier researches will also be placed on the dissection table of analysis, but meanwhile the problematic and even symptomatic experiences that the editors of the journal Philobiblon and its Romanian anthologies by the title Hermeneutica Bibliothecaria – Antologie Philobiblon have to confront are also organically exposed. These experiences outline as well the issues that practically any present or future responsible research of this type should focus on, as also the neuralgic points and mental traps which – once identified – will have to be either avoided, or assumed in the course of these researches. These traps, resulting precisely from the functioning and environment of this literature – which is, or pretends to be, equally professional and scientific – are and can be dangerous in the future, yet also eloquent with regard to their publishing and affiliation institutions.

Uma biblioteca em expansão / A growing library

In this article, we present the results of thorough research that encompasses these two collections [Casa Fernando Pessoa (CFP) and Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (BNP)] as well as a third, which consists of books and magazines that belong to Pessoa’s relatives and that have been appearing at a Lisbon auction house since October 2007. Our work entails (1) cataloguing all dust jackets in Pessoa’s literary estate now in the BNP and the small collection owned by his niece and heir, Manuela Nogueira; (2) determining whether they belong or not to books in Pessoa’s private library (see annexes I and II) and (3) checking if the annotations on the dust jackets are in any way connected with the book contents or not.

THE LIBRARY Between Tradition and Modernity

From the viewpoint of the library functions, the present paper focuses on the changes that had been made in the activities of the specialised personnel and in the services provided to the users, changes that occurred due to the introduction of modern computing and communication technologies. All these aspects are exemplified by applying them within the Central University Library in Cluj. What the libraries can do in order to support the education and research fields is briefly presented, ideas that represent staring points for projects that must be attained at a national level. The conclusions can represent marks for the people who unfold their activities, but most of all for the people who can influence or even decide the fates of the institutions whose importance is not fully appreciated.
