Basil of Caesarea in the Polyphony of the Fathers
In this short paper I sketch the personality of Basil of Caesarea and try to locate him within broader strands in early Christian traditions. I focus on both his activities and his theology emphasising especially his contribution to the solution of the trinitarian controversy.

Tradition and Polemic in Basil of Caesarea's Homily on the Theophany
Vigiliae Christianae, 2012
The bulk of Basil of Caesarea’s neglected Homilia in sanctam Christi generationem is a commentary on select verses of Matthew 1:18-2:11. He explicitly approves or rejects other interpretations, though without ever naming their authors. This study does not merely identify his sources and interlocutors, but more importantly examines how he engaged with previous and contemporary theologians and exegetes in a critical, selective, and creative manner. It shows that while Basil may have borrowed from Eusebius of Caesarea and refuted Eunomius, his primary conversation partner was Origen. Basil’s use of Origen is by no means uniform, but ranges from wholesale adoption to outright rejection. Hence it is in his appropriation of Origen that Basil’s critical, selective, and creative engagement with exegetical traditions is most clearly seen. This study concludes with a typology of seven ways in which Basil engaged with Origen in this homily.
St Basil of Caesarea authored To Young Men on Reading Greek Literature in the later half of the fourth century. His thinking and literary output illustrated the transitional nature of Late Antiquity. In his lifetime particularly, the glory of Ancient Greek and Roman culture with all of its natural knowledge, was acquiring another dimension in light of the ascendency of Christianity. St Basil received an excellent secular education in the liberal arts and excelled especially in rhetoric. He also led an exemplary ascetical life according to Christian tradition. To Young Men on Reading Greek Literature is a defense of the use of pagan, principally Greek letters by Christians. This paper will both analyse the rhetorical structure of Basil's treatise, as well as explore the wider intellectual phenomenon of cultural synthesis of which this treatise is a part.

Basil of Caesarea’s On the Holy Spirit has often been painted as a work that symbolises his emergence from the shadow of his embittered mentor, Eustathius of Sebaste. This paper reassesses the extent of Eustathius’ influence on the treatise. By analysing both the tone and argumentation of On the Holy Spirit, I counter this scholarly narrative, showing that Eustathius in fact serves as the silent interlocutor of the treatise, to whom Basil pleads the case of his orthodoxy, and with whom he begs for the church to be healed. Consequently, On the Holy Spirit should be read as more in vogue with apologetic literature than polemic , as a redoubled effort to respond to Eustathius that mounts an impassioned but cordial defence of Basil’s vision of Christian orthodoxy and a long-overdue plea for peace in a war-torn church.
