MEDEROS, A. (2018): “La trayectoria científica de Augusto Fernández de Avilés y Álvarez-Ossorio, Director interino del Museo Arqueológico Nacional”. Lucentum, 37: 307-329
Augusto Fernández de Avilés was appointed Director of the Archaeological Museum of Murcia in 1931 and Assistant Professor in the university (1931-36). In Murcia began to collaborate with Mergelina, like codirector of the excavation in the Iberian necropolis of Cabecico del Tesoro between 1935 and 1936. On this subject he tried to elaborate a doctoral thesis, but Mergelina preferred that the thesis was for his assistant, Nieto Gallo, to which he gave the field direction of the excavations. In 1941 he obtained the transfer to the National Archaeological Museum, collaborating in the excavations of Taracena in Vizcaya and Rioja (1942-46). At the same time, he strengthened his relationship with Garcia y Bellido, his new doctoral thesis director, who incorporated him as Assistant Professor of Archaeology (1942-45, 1948-49), Secretary of the journal Archivo Español de Arqueología (1946-58), Chief of Section in the Rodrigo Caro Institute (1952-58), and also participated in the excavations of Iuliobriga (Santander) (1953-58) and Herrera del Pisuerga (Palencia) (1960-61). His doctoral thesis on the Iberian sculpture of Cerro de los Santos (Albacete) (1949) did not serve to him to obtain the chair of Archaeology in Salamanca in 1949, where it did not have the support of Taracena, but it impelled to him to excavate the Cerro de los Santos between 1962 and 1963. When Navascués resigned as director of the National Archaeological Museum in 1966, he was appointed as temporary director in April 1967, and presented himself to the competition convened in July. He had the support of Nieto Gallo and Navascués, competing with Almagro Basch, but the dismissal of Nieto Gallo, and the appointment of Pérez Embid as new General Director of Fine Arts, in May 1968, facilitated the nomination of Almagro Basch, although shortly before Fernandez de Avilés had died of a leukemia, with 60 years old. Key words.
