The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Entrepreneurial Perceive
2015
Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial culture are receiving an increased amount of attention in both academic research and practice. Entrepreneurship is linked with value creation and, as such, is thought to have a significant impact on economic growth, continuous business renewal, and employment (Tang and Koreas, 2004). Thus, it is apparent why there is also an increased interest in educational programmers designed to encourage entrepreneurship and to provide a better infrastructure for Business start-ups (Vesper and Gartner, 1997). However, despite the high level of activity, there is concern about the effectiveness of such policies (Gibb, 2002). It is quite possible that a better understanding of the factors that influence attitudes towards entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intent could facilitate the successful development of these initiatives, especially for university students who, in comparison to individuals without university education, are more likely to pursue selfemplo...

Entrepreneurs' ability to be successful is dependent on their resilience and ability to be innovative. The role of emotional intelligence in activating entrepreneurs' innovativeness is yet to be explored in the entrepreneurial research. This preliminary study investigates the emotional intelligence, innovativeness and entrepreneurial success of entrepreneurs in Malaysia. The pilot study was carried out on 51 young entrepreneurs. The results indicate positive emotional intelligence can increase innovativeness that may lead to entrepreneurial success. Only "regulation of emotion in others" seems to be the most important dimension whereas other emotional intelligence elements seem to be less relevant to innovativeness and entrepreneurial success. Furthermore, there is no difference between male and female entrepreneurs in emotional intelligence and innovativeness but entrepreneurial success. This preliminary finding highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence especially on other elements of emotional intelligence in promoting innovativeness among entrepreneurs.

Research Summary: Using meta-analysis, we investigate the extent to which General Mental Ability (GMA) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) predict entrepreneurial success. Based on 65,826 observations, we find that both GMA and EI matter for success, but that the size of the relationship is more than twice as large for EI. Our study contradicts and adds important contextual nuance to previous meta-analyses on performance in traditional workplace settings, where GMA is considered to be more critical than EI. We also contribute to the literature on cognitive and emotional intelligence in entrepreneurship. Managerial Summary: While previous studies have shown General Mental Ability (GMA, cognitive intelligence) to be more important for success compared to Emotional Intelligence (EI) in traditional workplace settings, we theorize that EI will be more important in entrepreneurial contexts. Entrepreneurship is an extreme setting with distinct emotional and social demands relative to many other organizational settings. Moreover, managing an entrepreneurial business has been described as an "emotional rollercoaster." Thus, on a relative basis we expected EI to matter more in entrepreneurial contexts and explore this assumption using a meta-analysis of 65,826 observations. We find that both GMA and EI matter for entrepreneurial success, but that the size of the relationship is more than twice as large for EI. Cite as: Allen, Stevenson, O'Boyle, Seibert (2020). What matters more for entrepreneurship success? A meta-analysis comparing general mental ability and emotional intelligence in entrepreneurial settings.
