Parents' knowledge and skills about the risks of the digital world

In this article we present the level of knowledge and literacy held by the parents of primary school students regarding internet safety (online safety, digital safety) in the context of digital literacy (DL) in terms of both technical skills and knowledge. The study reported on here was conducted in Poland, and was commissioned by the Ministry of National Education. The research involved measuring the knowledge and skills regarding the prevention of electronic threats (e-threats) which are defined as problematic situations and behaviour mediated by digital media and the internet. E-threats are related to mental and physical health, social aspects and technical matters related to the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). In order to narrow down the research area, 6 components related to e-threats were selected, namely: the ergonomics of using digital media; the evaluation of the reliability of online information; the influence of advertising on consumers' choices; risky online relationships; understanding the mechanisms of secure logging-in; and protection against malware. The DL level was measured using a competence test. An analysis of 514 tests revealed that the most neglected areas were the protection of children against unwanted communication with other users, and secure logging-in. The strongest component was the ergonomics of using ICT. We also noted that more than one fifth of parents showed a satisfactory level of DL related to online safety. Another observation was that DL is a complex and heterogeneous concept. The DL components are related with one another to different extents. Some DL elements are determined by the level of education, place of living, subjective sense of own well-being or intuitive perception (self-evaluation).
Digital competences of parents in the matter of electronic threats

Digital competences have become one of basic skills in XXI century. Due to the ability to digitally access data and manage information and use electronic services, the quality of life has improved, and there has been an improvement in many activities connected with communication, shopping, ticket booking and a range of other repetitive activities. However, there is an additional layer overlapping the technical skills, which layer is connected with understanding the threats deriving from common availability of ICT. The aim of this paper is a diagnosis of digital competences level of parents in the matter of safe use of electronic media. To do this, quantitative research have been prepared, which measure six crucial areas of internet threats: ability to evaluate reliability of information on Internet, safety in the matter of contact with other users, image protection on Internet, knowledge concerning copyrights, knowledge concerning cyber-bullying mechanisms, proper performance of financial operations. The weakest areas of digital literacy seem to be: copyright protection and issues concerning contact with other users. The research was realized with the use of a competence test. The analysis was carried out on 260 parents of students attending secondary schools in the second half of 2016.
Online Safety as a New Component of Digital Literacy for Young People

Introduction. Digital literacy refers to the skills required to achieve digital competence, the confident and critical use of information and communication technology for learning, leisure, communication and future work of young people. Digital competence has a dual nature. First of all, it is the technical ability to operate programs, pages, equipment. Secondly, it is also the ability to use digital media safely. Both perspectives are important in the educational perspective, i.e. media education and socialisation. Materials and Methods. The paper presents the attempts to measure digital literacy in the area of threats resutling from using the new media in the group of upper-secondary school students (fourth educational cycle). The study was carried out using a diagnostic test with 18 questions. The research was conducted in the group of 1693 youths aged 15-21. The research was designed based on traditional methods of testing knowledge and skills. Results. The findings showed that the weakest digital literacy component was the copyright-related knowledge and the strongest area was online shopping and financial operations. All digital literacy components are interrelated. The improvement in one area leads to the development of other digital literacy elements. Despite this correlation, digital literacy is a heterogeneous concept. There are also differences regarding certain digital literacy components, determined by gender-girls obtained higher test results in terms of the soft competencies whereas boys were better with the technical aspects of digital literacy. Based on the cluster analysis, we noticed that 41.41% of the students obtained good and very good results from the competence test. More than half of the students require further education in most of the analysed areas. Discussion and Conclusion. For educational decision-makers, the findings highlight the importance of designing training programs aimed at developing students' digital literacies, with a special focus on new topics as sexting, piracy and cyberbullying.
Skills in the area of digital safety as a key component of digital literacy among teachers

The goal of the research was to assess the level of Digital Literacy (DL) among teachers. The study was diagnostic in order to show DL in six selected key areas: the ergonomics of using ICT, assessing the credibility of information, secure online communication, maintaining anonymity in the digital world, safe logging-in, and intellectual property. DL was measured using a knowledge and competence test. The study was conducted in Poland in 2017/2018 among 701 primary school teachers (primary being the second stage of education). Based on the data collected, we have noticed the following: DL is a heterogeneous concept; the respondents possess the lowest level of knowledge in the area of intellectual property law and know the most about ergonomics; gender does not determine the level of knowledge and competencies in the group. Furthermore, the Dunning-Kruger effect is noticeable among the teachers, in the context of evaluation of DL related to digital safety. We also need to emphasise that for teachers, DL is one of the key protective factors in digital safety, viewed holistically, in schools. Thus, diagnosing and facilitating the development of DL has become one of the key challenges faced by schools today.
DIGITAL LITERACY OF PRIMARY EDUCATION TEACHERS IN THE AREA OF DIGITAL SAFETY

Digital Literacy (DL) is one of the key competencies modern teachers should have. Regardless of the stage of education, they should be skilled in using modern ICT solutions. Fluent use of digital media is one of the DL components-as much important as the ability to understand and anticipate online threats. DL of teachers determines not only their own safety but also the safety of children in elementary education. The paper sets out to address the following question: What is the level of digital literacy regarding e-threats among primary school teachers? The answer was given based on a competence tests and a diagnostic survey results. The research was conducted among 222 teachers in Poland and was commissioned by the Ministry of National Education (project executor: Cities on the Internet Association Tarnów and Navigo Wroclaw). It is the first research based on a real measurement of DL in the following areas: ergonomics of using ICT, reliable evaluation of online information, influence of advertising on children, relationships with other people through the Internet, setting logins and passwords, and malware protection. The conclusion are surprising: teachers have insufficient knowledge regarding protection of children against e-communication threats but their competencies regarding malware protection are relatively high. Particular support in strengthening DL should be provided to trainees, that is, teacher who begin their professional career.

The research objective was to determine the level of digital literacy (DL) among teachers. The scope of DL was narrowed to the issue of the safe use of electronic media.The research was conducted using a competency test and diagnostic survey. The following aspects of DL were measured: awareness of the mechanisms of communication with other internet users and any threats resulting thereof; understanding what sexting is and what is meant by invasion of privacy; knowledge about copyright; ability to verify the credibility of information available online (the least developed area of DL); awareness of cyberbullying and the prevention thereof (the most developed DL skill); and the security of online financial operations. The study was conducted in the second half of 2016 in Poland, and was commissioned by the Ministry of National Education responsible for the Bezpieczna+ (Safe+) project. The survey was carried out among 421 lower-secondary school teachers (covering three grades for children aged 12/13 to 15/16) from all over the country. The research results can be generalised at α = 0.95 level. The teachers surveyed show different levels of DL. The teachers of technical subjects (including ICT) obtained the best results, whereas natural science 2 teachers scored the lowest. Age was not a determinant of ICT expertise. A low level of DL and safety skills prevails in the group of teachers who have recently began their career in education (trainees). The group of beginner teachers in particular should be given educational support. This research also breaks the stereotype that young teachers have much more advanced DL than older teachers.

The text shows the importance of digital literacy among teachers in Poland. The analysis presented in the article narrows the concept of digital literacy to security issues. The importance of the subject results from the fact that teachers constitute an important link in the development of digital security at the second educational stage. The research was carried out on a sample of 279 teachers throughout Poland in 2016. The research is part of a national studies into the field of digital security in the school and family environment. The analyzes were carried out on behalf of the Ministry of National Education, commissioned by the Cities on the Internet Association (Stowarzyszenie Miasta w Internecie). The sample amounted up to 279 educators. The research tool involved: a knowledge and skill test on e-threats and a diagnostic survey (measuring attitudes towards the new media and collecting the sociodemographic data). The DL measurement was carried out as for the following areas: ergonomics of using the digital tools, reliability of information available on the Internet, safe interactions with other users, secure logins and passwords, protection of online image, copyrights. Each area was measured using 3 questions; the total number of test questions was eighteen. The tests are the attempt to go beyond the hitherto measurements of DL based on self-declarations. The weakest results were obtained in the area of copyrights. The highest test results were obtained for question regarding the protection from hoax. Teachers-beginners got the lowest results, thus they should be provided with particular support. The research shows the heterogeneity of the DL concept and the need for a lifelong education in the area of e-threats.

Information Communication and Technology (ICT) has become crucial to human life. Nowadays, people rely on technology to carry out their daily activities and is used extensively across the globe. Individuals can communicate, work, learn and entertain themselves more effectively. However, there were also some threats that need to be considered by individuals while surfing the internet and need to be safety. This paper aims to identify the relationship between digital intelligence competencies focusing on Digital Communication, Digital Literacy, and Digital Safety on Online Behaviour among university students. The respondents of this research were students from a public university in Terengganu, ranging from prediploma to postgraduate programs, who involved themselves in online activities. The questionnaires were adopted from previous research, and a link to Google Forms was given to students using WhatsApp application. The questionnaires are related to the digital intelligence quotient and online behaviour. There were 184 questionnaires used for the analysis. Data were analysed using SmartPLS version 3.99. Based on the findings, a significant relationship exists between digital communication, digital literacy, and digital safety in online behaviour.
