Changes in the Age Distribution of Mortality Over the 20th Century

2001

Mortality has declined continuously in the United States over the course of the 20th century, and at relatively constant rates. But the constancy of mortality reductions masks significant heterogeneity by age, cause, and source. Using historical data on death by age and cause, this paper describes the characteristics of mortality decline over the 20th century. Early in the 20th century, mortality declines resulted from public health and economic measures that improved peoples' ability to withstand disease.

Human Demography: A Comparative Analysis on the Death Rate Between Before 1950 and After 1950 Research Paper By

Philippines is one of the most populated countries in Asia, with a population of 113.9 million, which resulted in various issues in human demography like human settlement, climate change, and pollution that severely affected the death rate and birth rate of the country. Thus, demography is the quantitative study of human populations, particularly with regard to distribution, size, density, and vital statistics (births, marriages, and deaths) (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2023). The research entitled "Human Demography: A Comparative Analysis on the Death Rate Between Before 1950 and After 1950" is a study that seeks to determine and compare the human demography between Before 1950 and After 1950 in the four main study sites and sources of information: Tayabas, Lucena, Calaug, and Laguna. For the study, the researcher gathered 75 samples (before 1950) and 75 samples (after 1950). All of the information and samples were collected through cemeteries and supporting documents. This study seeks to compare and describe the human demography in the provinces of Quezon and Laguna, especially the factors affecting the human population. Thus, this research applied descriptive and cohort approaches to thoroughly analyze the population. The statistical treatment/analysis used to quantitatively analyze the study was performed in Microsoft Excel, which was also used to create graphical representations. Based on the study, it shows that diseases, healthcare system, lifestyle, and natural accidents are the main factors in human demography.

Demographic Transition and Population Ageing

Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, 2015

This article discusses the findings of a literature review on older persons globally. In recent years the number of older persons aged 60 years and older is growing worldwide. Declining in birth and mortality rates are said to be the main contributors to this new phenomenon. Life expectancy of general population has also increased, and thus the number of older population in society increased. Although all nations in the world are experiencing the growth of older population, developed countries has a relatively large portion of this population in their population structure. The purpose of this article is analyzing the process of demographic transistion that produces the growth of older person world wide. In particular, it describes the growth of older population globally with particular emphasis on the proportion of older population over the years, distribution of older population, and rate of growth of this older population. By using a secondary analysis, various sources related to older persons at international level are reviewed. This paper highlights that the proportion of older population has increased, it has distributed unevently, and the growth rate of older population is higher as compared to the growth of the total population globally.

Ageing of Population: A Contemporary Issue

Ageing of population is natural consequence of process of demographic transition. It is going to be the most noteworthy demographic characteristic feature of the twenty-first century. Ageing of population represents gradual shifts in relative share of population towards older age groups. Ageing of population is a global phenomenon with great regional variations. Ageing of population has social, economic and political implications. To address the physical, socio-emotional and economic needs of old age population, innovative public policies and service deliveries are required. The objectives of the present paper are – (i) to describe the trends and patterns of ageing of population; (ii) to explain the causes of ageing of population; (iii) to highlight implications of ageing of population; and (iv) finally, to identify the needs of ageing population.
