The article analyses the relations between orality and writing in legal teaching at the time of the Renaissance. While XII-XVI c. University education in the legal area is dominated by the oral lecture, some forms of "lecturae ad pennam", mainly by way of dictation, appear in the sources. The origin of these forms in the faculty of arts, and its expansion in the legal faculties are discussed. Its differentiated territorial diffusion is then analyzed, in French and Italian schools, on the one hand, and Eastern European schools, on the other, with relation to complementary issues such as book production (the institution of pecia) and elementary teaching. Possible purposes of these forms of dictation are then examined, with regard to course repetitions and recollectae/reportationes.
