Usability experiences with South African online banking
wits.ac.za
Online banking is one of the most utilised aspects of the Internet in South Africa. In an earlier survey we found that respondents from the smaller, niche banks held more positive attitudes towards these banks than respondents utilising the larger, traditional banks. In this study, we wished to investigate how the usability aspects of these two types of banks might contribute to the differences in attitudes. A sample of 1690 respondents was obtained by posting a survey with a prominent South African portal. The results suggest that there are statistically significant perception differences of usability aspects between respondents of the niche and traditional banks. The usability aspects that contribute to these differences are investigated in order to provide usability recommendations for the traditional banks.

Online banking is one of the most utilised aspects of the Internet in South Africa. In an earlier unpublished survey we found that respondents from the smaller, niche banks held more positive attitudes towards the niche banks than respondents utilising the larger, traditional banks. In this study, we wished to investigate how the usability aspects of these two types of banks might contribute to the differences in attitudes we found in our earlier survey. A questionnaire was posted on a prominent South African portal. A total of 1690 usable questionnaires were completed during the three weeks that the survey was active. The results of this study showed that there were statistically significant differences in the perception of 10 usability dimensions between respondents from the niche and the traditional banks. In addition, there were also statistically significant differences in the perceptions towards online assistance between respondents using the two types of banking. These results are discussed in terms of the different approaches of the niche and traditional banks, and the usability recommendations that the traditional banks might wish to adopt for their online banking services and products.

Research evaluates the effects of website user friendliness or in a broader sense: web usability (UF), perceived usefulness (PU) and interactions towards internet banking adoption in the context of Sri Lankan commercial banks and finance companies. Sample consisting 60 respondents, was drawn from the students of Uwa Wellassa University considering the simple random sampling method. Questionnaire survey was performed amongst each of 30 male and female respondents in which they were requested to rate nine internet banking websites of aforesaid institutions (segregated considering UF-very high/high/average and PU-very high/high/average attributes and designated nine websites as first being UF-very high and PU-very high and following the same sequence) out of total score of 100 with respect to adoption of internet banking services (AoIBS). TAM and E-SERVQUEL models have been adopted. Mixed design ANOVA was used as the primary analysis tool. Empirical evidence supported all the four hypotheses indicating the significance of levels of UF, PU and interactions on AoIBS. Non evaluation of sub interactions on UF * PU and Gender * UF * PU was a limitation of the present study. However, findings of the research would be beneficial in uplifting the status of internet banking adoption in Sri Lanka across the entire banking and financial institutions. Mixed ANOVA analysis and incorporation of aforementioned related models would contribute towards originality of the study. Similarly, future researches could be performed in different contexts alongside related variables in quest of innovative findings.
Website usability evaluation: Reliability of questionnaires in the South African context
The Web is becoming the preferred delivery mode of learning management services and information distribution portals. Intensive research has been done towards improving the usability of these Web sites. Post-test questionnaires are often used as a tool in evaluating e-services. In this paper we investigated the reliability of post-test questionnaires as an evaluation tool in the South African context. The study was done at a South African, multi-cultural open-distance learning university. We conducted two usability studies that included formal laboratory testing, eye tracking, and post-test questionnaires. The first study investigated the usability of an assignment submission learning management system while the second study focused on the usability of the university information portal. Our participants were a multi-cultural group that represented 11 different languages. Ten out of the 11 were official South-African languages. Sukkur IBA Journal of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, 2021
Usability is a key factor in the quality of the product, which includes ease of use, user satisfaction and the ability of the user to quickly understand the product without practice. As smartphone usage increases, most organizations have shifted their services to mobile applications, such as m-banking. Most of the people uses banking services but hesitate to use m-banking due to complex interfaces. Usability researchers concentrate on the value of design simplicity so that users can perform a particular task with satisfaction, efficiency, and effectiveness. If a mobile app lacks one of these usability features, users may get confused while using the app. This research examines the key usability issues in existing m-banking after checking the usability satisfaction level through System Usability Scale. To compare and highlight a number of usability issues, the researcher used two types of usability evaluation method 'User Testing' and 'Heuristic Evaluation'. In heuris...

Proceedings of IADIS Interfaces and Human Computer Interaction 2013. Prague: IADIS Press, 2013. v. 1. p. 235-239.
Through an assessment of the Itaú Bank website, this paper presents a methodology, based on ISO 9241 (NBR 9241-11:2002), to evaluate, in global metrics, the effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction with online usability research. The final data were calculated as percentages based on score scale of SUS (ALBERT & TULLIS, 2008). Eight individuals participated in this study. Three were woman and five were man, and their average age was 31 years. The results indicate that the interaction with the interface is satisfactory, but its efficacy must be improved. This paper also presents a simple method of measuring the level of performance of the interface.
