The Internet of things (IoT) involves several internet-connected devices that interact with each other to learn and share information between humans and machines and between machines and machines, making the related processes more comprehensive, innovative, simple, and efficient. There are several applications of IoT in construction, such as using computational tools in structural design, georeferencing, construction management, and using technological tools in construction sites. Therefore, this article presents a systematic review of the most relevant studies from Industry 4.0 and the application of IoT in the construction industry to present the impacts these technologies can promote in construction. On this, the 4.0 technology implementation and their construction innovations can improve work conditions through innovative tools, machines, and devices, increasing productivity and reducing production costs. Therefore, drone operation is one of the most used construction technologies, mainly because the costs are low for construction companies and their owners. However, technologies such as BIM and robotics are widely used.

PurposeThe Internet of Things (IoT) provides exciting opportunities for the construction industry to solve its time and resource constraints and frequent defaults. This study conducts a cross-sectoral comparative analysis of academic and industry literature to determine the use cases of the internet of things (IoT). Specifically, the research seeks to explore digital applications (e.g., building information modeling (BIM), radio frequency identification (RFID)) within the construction supply chaina sector berated for its lack of innovation. An interpretivist epistemological lens provides the overarching methodological approach adopted in which the literature constitutes units of analysis. Ensuing discussion defines the architecture of proposed real-life scenarios and provides a description of an IoT layout for these scenarios. In practical terms, the study contributes to the field by raising awareness of potential use cases of IoT for construction practitioners as 'proof of concepts'. For researchers, the findings provide a blueprint template layout of suggested use cases to be tested in future research studies hence, offering a sound basis and a fertile ground for advancing the body of knowledge on this topic area.

That is why the construction industry should start the use of applications offered by IoT to ascertain the smoothness and fast progress of the construction process. At present, developing countries like India, needs fast development of infrastructure and construction, so the better solution is to use IoT applications to boost the speed of construction. This paper mainly aims to check the feasibility of IoT in the construction industry and to find out the IoT applications which are utilized for fast and quality development of construction, through a designed questionnaire survey with in the middle Gujarat state particularly in Vadodara and Anand district. After conducting a survey, the nominal analysis is to be done for the ranking of the IoT applications used in the industry. The top 3 majorly used applications and 3 least used applications are considered for ranking in this paper about the utilization of IoT applications in the construction industry, particularly for the area where the survey was conducted.

Over the past decade, researchers have used IoT & Big data in the construction industry for various applications from site inspection to safety monitoring or building maintenance. This research paper aims to assort academic studies on IoT & big data applications, summarize logics behind using IoT & Big data in each application and extend understanding of current state of IoT & BD research in construction industry. This research follows a systematic literature assessment methodology to summarize the results over the last ten years and outline the research trends for applying IoT & BD in construction industry. IoT & BD are used in Safety Management, Surveying & Mapping, Construction Logistic Management, Construction Project Monitoring, Structural Health Monitoring, Smart Building Application, Waste Management & many more. Time efficiency and improved accessibility are the primary reasons for choosing IoT & BD in construction. The case studies provided have used IoT in every way imaginable to assist them in safety management, surveying and mapping, construction logistic management, construction project monitoring, and structure health monitoring, but they lack effective big data application. The challenges identified from literature were identified and results are as follows: The findings showed that the barriers related to "productivity reduction due to wearable sensors", "the need for technical training", and "the need for continuous monitoring" were the most significant, while "limitations on hardware and software and lack of standardization in efforts," "the need for proper light for smooth functionality", and "false alarms" were the least important barriers. The results obtained from this research not only offer new understanding for those in academia, but also offer practical guidance for stakeholders in the construction industry by identifying the main obstacles to the adoption of IoT and Building Information Modelling (BD) technologies.

IoT is a man-made technology conceptualized by intelligent virtual objects, which capable of knowing all things and allows the devices around themselves to interact automatically without human control. Every year, the number of IoT devices usage is exponentially increasing and estimated as much as 75.44 billion devices will be connected in IoT network. In line with the expansion of the IoT network, the construction industry should take into consideration as otherwise the construction industry will be left behind by other industries. This is because the construction industry should utilize the applications offered by IoT to ensure the smoothness of the construction industry in the project. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the types of IoT applications used in the construction industry in Malaysia. The research method used to identify the types of IoT applications used is through the questionnaire method. The questionnaire was analysed using nominal analysis. A study was conducted on construction industry players which comprising of government agencies, developers, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and class G7 contractors covering all states in Malaysia. The findings show that among the many types of IoT applications used by construction industry players are social media such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook for discussion and communication purposes, the use of email for information and communication exchange and website usage as a source of reference to obtain data on company profiles, acts and policy, price quotes and so on.
