Due to their age and lifestyle, female students in general are at an increased risk of various forms of sexual violence. Particular sociocultural contexts also form the background of gender-based violence in professional and academic structures. Yet despite institutional and legal efforts to protect (potential) survivors of sexual violence from primary (and secondary) victimization, persistent assaults demonstrate the reluctance of organizations and individuals to fully accept women’s experiences as being physically and psychologically harmful. As a form of gender-based violence, sexual harassment represents one of the most serious obstacles to gender equality in higher education institutions. A systematic and institutional response is required in order for the problem to be regulated. This chapter provides a short overview of the existing institutional mechanisms adopted-with the support system built within the TARGET project-at the University of Belgrade and its member institutions, as a possible and good practice model of institutional interventions dealing with this issue. With three member faculties already having previously introduced their own rulebooks, the first University of Belgrade Rulebook on the Prevention of and Protection from Sexual Harassment was adopted university-wide in 2021. This document represents an important step forward and a substantial support to all the member institutions in the process of regulating the prevention of and protection from sexual harassment and thus contributes substantially to gender equality at all levels of the institution.

The sociocultural contexts of higher education institutions form the background for gender-based violence in professional structures and environment of academia. The article presents the comparative analysis of sexual violence and the reasons for its (non-)disclosure at the universities in Lithuania and Cyprus. The findings of focus group interviews conducted within the framework of the Ending Sexual Harassment and Violence in Third Level Education (ESHTE) project, co-funded by the European Union, have been summarized in the present research. While it's true that human rights violations are committed against men as well as women, their impact clearly differs depending on the sex of the victims. Studies of the subject indicate that all acts of aggression against women exhibit some characteristics or other that provides a basis for their classification as gender-based violence. 52 respondents chosen from 4 main bachelor programs in UiTM via stratified sampling technique. Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education: An Integrative Review

Background: The phenomenon of gender-based violence is a global phenomenon that affects women negatively, including those in higher education. The scourge of gender-based violence has been highlighted in numerous studies and statistics have shown that instead of decreasing, the incidence thereof is rising. Aim: To critically analyse research that has been conducted to understand the phenomenon of gender-based violence in higher education. Methodology: The revised integrative review protocol of Whittemore and Knafl was employed in the analysis. A comprehensive search was undertaken for gender-based violence in higher education research conducted and published between 2010 and 2021. Literature indexes in CINAHL, Medline, Proquest and Pubmed were searched. Search terms were gender-based, violence, and higher education. The integrative approach was used to conduct the methodological review. A sample of 12 research articles and reports that met the inclusion criteria were analysed. A systematic iterative method was employed to extract and reduce the data in order to draw conclusions. Results: Factors leading to gender-based violence, its effects on the victim and methods to eliminate its occurrence were revealed by the analysis. Conclusion: Becoming aware of factors contributing to gender-based violence and strategies to address this scourge can minimise the occurrence of gender-based violence in higher education institutions. Contribution: Understanding the concepts and strategies to prevent the occurrence of gender-based violence can assist higher education institutions to minimise these incidences.

Brazilian university students report cases of rape on campus. In Portugal, young women experience humiliation and sexism when they enter university. In the UK, protests in an academic context put to the test policies for women. These narratives are present in a postdoctoral research that will discuss violence against women in universities. One of the products resulting from this work will be a documentary that attempts to deal with the subjective perceptions of teachers, technicians and students about gender violence in the Academy. Focusing on feminist epistemology that values experience as a way of knowing, this research has women as protagonists in both the denunciations and the execution of a video-activism on the subject.
Menace of school-related gender-based violence in higher institutions

School-based violence against female students relates to acts of sexual, physical, emotional, or psychological abuse and brutality inflicted on students in and around schools. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The total number of respondents in the study was 602 students, which served as the sample in this study. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used for data generation. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question raised in the study. The hypotheses generated were analysed with an independent t-test at .05 level of significance. The major causes of school-related gender-based violence [SRGBV], as indicated by the respondents, were broken homes where there was separation of parents, and economic factors such as poverty and unemployment. The main consequences of SRGBV were truancy, absenteeism, and eventual dropout. The most widely acceptable way strategy to control the menace of SRGBV in colleges of education was the use of widespread public enlightenment on the evils of violence against females. In conclusion, SRGBV on students is a serious problem with many causes and negative consequences. It was recommended that Government and Non-Government Organizations organize public enlightenment programmes to educate the public on the evils associated with SRGBV.
