A review on solar energy use in industries

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2011

"Presently, solar energy conversion is widely used to generate heat and produce electricity. A comparative study on the world energy consumption released by International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that in 2050, solar array installations will supply around 45% of energy demand in the world. It was found that solar thermal is getting remarkable popularity in industrial applications. Solar thermal is an alternative to generate electricity, process chemicals or even space heating. It can be used in food, non-metallic, textile, building, chemical or even business related industries. On the other hand, solar electricity is wildly applied in telecommunication, agricultural, water desalination and building industry to operate lights, pumps, engines, fans, refrigerators and water heaters. It is very important to apply solar energy for a wide variety of applications and provide energy solutions by modifying the energy proportion, improving energy stability, increasing energy sustainability, conversion reduction and hence enhance the system efficiency. The present work aimed to study the solar energy systems utilization in industrial applications and looked into the industrial applications which are more compatible to be integrated with solar energy systems." http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364032110004533

Solar Energy An Eternal Renewable PowerResource

International Journal of Advanced Research in Electrical, Electronics and Instrumentation Energy, 2014

There are many sources of energy that are renewable and considered to be environmentally friendly and harness natural processes. These sources of energy provide an alternate ‘cleaner’ source of energy, helping to negate the effects of certain forms of pollution. All of these power generation techniques can be described as renewable since they are not depleting any resource to create the energy. While there many large-scale renewable energy projects and production are in existence, renewable technologies are also suited to small off-grid applications, somewhere in rural and remote areas, where energy is often crucial in human development. Though the initial cost is high, central / state government should offer incentive programs to make “green” energy a more economically viable option. The main objectives are to bringing down the cost and component used in the power system through the enhancement of efficiency and reliability of the renewable energy sources with minimal maintenance &...

POTENTIAL OF SOLAR ENERGY : SOLUTION OF ENERGY CRISIS -- A REVIEW

ABSTRACT : Taking into account the growth in global energy consumption, world energy problems are of major importance and utilisation of the conventional carriers of energy must be limited. For mankind to survive on the earth in the nearby future energy source other than fossil fuels must be developed. A solar radiation is a non exhausting reservoir of energy. The part of solar energy reaching the earth atmosphere is about 1018 kWh/year. This energy is higher than energy stored in all recognised fossil fuels sources. In this review energy crisis and potential of solar energy is discussed to solve crisis along with advantages and disadvantage of solar energy.

POTENTIAL STUDY ADDRESSING SHORTAGE OF POWER AND ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGH FORESEEABLE SOLAR POWER

India is densely populated and has high solar insolation, an ideal combination for using solar power in India. India is already a leader in wind power generation. India is now one of the top five solar energy developments worldwide as per Ernst & Young’s renewable energy attractiveness index. As per report by WATO-India, 2012, the Indian Renewable Energy business market is experiencing a growth rate of 15 %/yr and the opportunities for private investments are estimated to be of about USD 34 billion. Solar is becoming financially viable for commercial and industrial sectors ,which is leading the power deficient southern states of the country such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala suffering from rising costs of conventional power to gradually shift towards solar energy so as to have long-term solutions for their power needs. Thus, these developments give indication for a good future for solar development. The initiation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) is one of the eight missions of India that makes clear the nation’s vision for solar technology. This 19 billion USD plan was launched on the 11th January, 2010 by the Prime Minister of India. The future energy mix is expected to have a reduced contribution of indigenous coal as an energy source due to higher costs, logistic constraints, poor quality and dependence on imported coal to run thermal power plants. The country thus faces possibility of severe energy supply constraints and is in need of alternative energy sources. An endeavored is made through this contributing paper whether we could foresee better future energy mix of India.

Solar energy and possibilities of its usage

Journal of Civil Engineering, Environment and Architecture, 2013

This paper represents ways to produce electric power and heat by means of solar radiation. There are described advantages and disadvantages of using solar energy in modern conditions. There are shown examples of using Sun energy in variety of manufacturing branches and transport. Solar energy is assumed a solar radiation which is used to produce some kind of power. Solar power uses renewable source of energy and can become one which would be, in perspective, ecologically clean so as to not produce hazardous wastes. Now solar power is being widely used when scarce of other sources of energy added by plenitude of solar radiation is economically reasonable. Theoretically the advantage of solar energy is in its total safety for environment (however manufacturing photo-cells uses harmful substances). There's potential risk that total implementing of solar power can change albedo of the Earth surface and bring to changes in its climate. But in the modern level of using this power it's highly unlikely. The problem of having large spaces of the ground under solar installations is solved by using solar aerostat power stations, applicable to land, sea or air bases. Solar energy flow that reaches the Earth surface strongly depends on latitude and climate. For different places the average annual amount of sunny days can vary significantly. The problem that power of solar power station depends on time of the day and weather is solved by solar aerostat power stations. The next problem is the high price set on solar photocells. This disadvantage can be probably eliminated with developing technology. Today prices for photocells lower at the average by 4% annually.
