Code-switching in Daily Conversations among Iraqi Students in Malaysia

Code switching is the process of shifting from one language to another one in the same conversation. It is a generally observed phenomenon in bilingual or multilingual speakers" interactions. It occurs more commonly in the informal contexts where participants of the conversations are among friends, family members or acquaintances. Code-switching (CS) is common among Arabic speakers so they regularly switch codes from English to Arabic in their utterances too. Iraqi students are not an exception so they frequently use English-Arabic code switching. This paper intends to examine code switching behavior of Iraqi speakers and the types of code switching used by them. Furthermore, it seeks to explore the causes and consequences of code switching phenomenon on Iraqi students" target language proficiency. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers conducted a case study using a survey questionnaire and audio taping a 35-minutes conversation among six Iraqi students in a Malaysian university. The findings of the study indicate that Iraqi students use various types of CS mostly to assert the group identity and as a result of lack of vocabulary in English (L2).

Socio Linguistic Study of Code Switching of the Arabic Language Speakers on Social Networking

Researches on code-switching in the past have a concentration on the verbal language, few on its written form. This study attempts to cover and analyze the notion of code-switching in electronic contexts. The objective of this study is to discuss the code-switching functions performed by Arabic-English bilingual users in their Facebook interactions. The data of this study were collected from status updates posted by the bilingual users on their Facebook wall. They were classified and analyzed according to the functions they served in the Facebook context. Findings indicate that code switching occurs in online interaction to serve addressee specification, reiteration, message qualification, clarification, emphasis, checking, indicating emotions, availability, principle of economy and free switching functions. This study hopes to provide insights on the code-switching phenomenon in Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). Additionally, the findings of this study will be of value for the development of code-switching studies in the socio linguistic area.

Code Switching As A Communicative Strategy For The Bilingual Saudi Speakers At Jouf University

Besides to the communicative function of language there is the social function which shows the role that language plays in society. This can be noted in sociolinguistics through code switching. The main purpose of the case study is to investigate and understand the functions of Arabic-English code switching among the bilingual Saudi speakers in Jouf University from a sociolinguistic perspective. The case study was carried out qualitatively. This paper focuses on the analysis and discussion of the code switching of four bilingual Saudi speakers living in Jouf, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through observation, audio taping and semi-structured interviews. – Language is essential for communication. People who are involved in cross cultural communication have to be bilingual in order to interact with people from a different language background (Blackwell. Woolard, K. (2005). Bilingualism opens up various new pathways of thoughts, expressions, and it helps to reduce misunderstanding in interactions (Hidayat, T. 2012). The purpose of this review is to find out how code-switching plays a vital role in language communication especially in the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, SMS and Chat. This study reviewed fifteen journal articles to examine the ways code-switching was used. The review was to discover social phenomena and authentic identities of social actors. The study discovered that code-switching has been used widely to unmask bilinguals' cultural background and group identity during online communication via Facebook. Finally, code-switching can be used to obtain positive feelings to the interlocutor, which here was combined with introducing humour as an in-group marker, quoting, and to some extent topic specificity as well as possible vocabulary limitation in one language or the other, in the online conversation by bilinguals such as to express group solidarity.

Code-Switching in Whatsapp-Exchanges: Cultural or Language Barrier?

This paper explores the employment of code-switching in Social Media ‘Whats-app (WA)’ Bahasa text, namely from Bahasa to Javanese, English and/or to Arabic. Two WA groups are chosen namely ‘Trending Topic’ and ‘LPPM’ WA group as they are more universal chat places for Unissula academia than other faculty limited members of WA groups. This is a descriptive qualitative research, deeply analyzing several purposefully selected data. Interviews with some members of WA groups were performed to gain some data related to the use of code switching. The writer found that the main reason for code-switching is therefore to keep on communication by using technology-related, Koranic-related or Javanese-colloquial terms to try to refer to certain concepts of which the equivalence for such terms are not available in Bahasa. Social Factors for Code-Switching-a Study of Malaysian-English Bilingual Speakers

The study reported in this paper concentrates on the factors motivating code-switching within the social context of Malay-English bilingual speeches. Information for the survey was collected by means of transcribing different short video clips in Malay-English conversations. In the current study, the data were analysed within the sketch of Malik's framework [22] to find the social factors and social dimensions of code-switching parts. The finding of the study revealed that 'show identity' is the most frequent reason for motivating the speakers to switch languages. Information gained from the study will help provide insight on why Malaysian-English bilingual speakers use code-switching in their conversations.
