The determination of individual values is the first step in the process of the personal development. Thus, the main purpose of this research is to investigate the difference between value hierarchies of Riga students and rural students and their subjective opinions about factors affecting them and compare the results with the values of previous generations. It is a pilot study with a comparative cross-sectional design. The study was carried out in several schools of Latvia in 2018: 2 schools of Riga and 2 rural schools of Vidzeme region. Participants were 11th and 12th grade students: 50 from Riga, 50 from rural schools. The research of values was based on the M. Rokeach value ranking test. It is found that the individual hierarchies of values in one group context differ more than hierarchies of adolescent groups of various years and different backgrounds. SOCIAL-ECONOMIC FACTORS' INFLUENCE ON THE CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN HUMAN VALUES -EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

The paper searches for the answer to the question "What are the main reasons for the formation of the contemporary Bulgarian human values?". The usage of some "traditional" statistical methods and also non-conventional ones such as the structural equation modeling, in combination with data from the ESS representative national survey, provides a solid basis for a thoroughgoing analysis of the complex system of relations and interconnections between observed and latent types of variables. The results from the executed analyses are convincing and provide enough evidence for the adequate decision making process.

This article is dedicated to the 10 th anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to the European Union-EU (01.01.2007-01.01.2017) and the 60 th anniversary of its creation (25.03.1957-25.03.2017). The aim of the study is to compare the Bulgarian cultural model with that of the EU member states and to outline the value similarities and differences among them. On the basis of the method for diagnostics of cultural value orientations proposed by Schwartz [8] it can be established that while the cultural value ideal of Bulgarians is unique, it is nonetheless close to that in some post-communist countries with its high level of embeddedness, hierarchy and mastery, defining the catching-up role of the national culture versus the European values and practices oriented towards autonomy, egalitarianism and harmony. However, the analysis of the value hierarchy reveals that value priorities in Bulgaria such as intellectual autonomy, harmony and egalitarianism are comparable to the commonly shared attitudes and stereotypes in the EU members, which proves that the country belongs to the European civilization family.
NAGORNIAK, Kateryna. Self-expression values of youth as an indicator of changes in Ukraine (based on the refined Shalom Schwartz basic human values scale). Abstract: The article presents the results of the pilot study of the refined method of basic human values proposed by Shalom Schwartz (translated and adapted into Ukrainian). The methodology has greater possibilities for detailing and evaluation of human values compared to the previous version of the scale. In the modern version of the model, 19 basic values are allocated and placed on the motivational circle organized by the following principle: the neighboring values are the most compatible, the opposite ones-conflict with each other. The English version of the technique was translated into Ukrainian and tested on two pilot studies. The abridged version of six values (18 statements) was tested during the sociological study "Youth of Ukraine-2017" which was conducted by Centre of Independent Sociological Research "Omega" for the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine. The survey was initiated within the framework of the State Target Social Program "Youth of Ukraine" for 2016-2020, approved by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The survey was conducted between July 20th and August 10th, 2017. The research method was a structured interview (face-to-face) conducted by a questionnaire survey among young people aged 14 to 34 (Ukrainian citizens). Respondents were interviewed at the place of their residence. The selection of respondents was carried out by the route method. The research sample was 2,000 respondents aged 14-34, representative of the main socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, area of residence, size of settlement); standard deviations at a reliable 99 percent and the ratio of variables from 0.1 to 0.5 are 1.73-2.88 percent. The geography of the study included 24 administrative units of Ukraine and the city of Kiev (except for the occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, and the temporarily uncontrolled territory of Ukraine, where the state authorities temporarily do not exercise their powers both partially and in full). The obtained results allowed to verify the conceptual and empirical validity of each statement, which are indicators of measurable values. Indicators of quality of the model allow concluding about the best explanatory model of human values measured by Sh. Schwartz. The best quality indicators were obtained during the modification of the model using the ESEM and RI-EFA methods. The framework of the study was the possibility of constructing a self-expression value indicator, which would characterize Ukrainian youth in connection with its participation in the political and public life of the country, readiness to create its own business, youth mobility, and attitude to migration. The created indicator distinguishes the sample and allows to characterize young people aged 14 – 34. According to the results, young people with self-expression values declare their willingness to participate in the political life of the country, to hold elected positions, to initiate participation in youth organizations, to create their own business, as well as show readiness for migration with further return after gained experience abroad. The indicator has a significant statistical connection with the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. The level of inherency and non-inherency of self-expression values differs by age: with age, the proportion of those for whom the value of self-expression is inherent decreases. By regionality, the value of self-expression is more common for young people from the Northern and Southern regions. Social value orientations and normative patterns within which individuals and groups are socialized are of vital importance for the sociological analysis of a society. Human behaviour is shaped, regulated and directed around these cultural imperatives, as well as are people's interpersonal relations, their actions and creativity. People's values influence their selection of desirable goals; they direct and design human actions and behaviours. Setting off from this definition of values, we have tried to identify the specificities of value patterns in the Montenegrin post-socialist period, during which numerous changes have taken place in all spheres of social life. This is considered as particularly important, having in mind that social values determine the level of acceptability of a certain social system. Numerous studies we have referred to indicate that the national culture of this area is characterized by a unique combination of high power distance, collectivism, dominant "feminine" values and high uncertainty avoidance. These characteristics must have profound effect on the structures and processes in various institutions and organizations, but also on the model of economic development, as well as the overall social relations.
Managing uncertainty of young people's transitions to adulthood in Bulgaria

The paper examines the strategies of young people in Bulgaria for responding to and dealing with uncertainty in the passage to autonomy. It focuses on the active engagement of the young in the processes of identity formation and gaining independence, thus initiating a change in the common patterns of growing up. The biographical choices that the young make are analysed as embedded in a multilayered social context involving the interplay of macro societal changes, shifts in organisational policies and practices and restructuring of gender and generational relations in the family. Theoretically this paper builds upon the concept of uncertainty in understanding the dilemma of structure and agency in youth transitions. The analysis is based upon official statistical information about economic and demographic trends in 21 st century Bulgaria and the findings of an organisational case study of a social service agency and biographical interviews with young working parents, which were conducted within the framework of the international Transitions project. Two case studies of individual strategies of young women-one from a working class family and the other from an ethnic minority-are presented in more detail in order to examine the agency they apply in coping with uncertainty and the resources they mobilize in devising (everyday and short-term) life projects. The combination of quantitative and qualitative data allows a reflection on the process of managing uncertainty with regards to the past experiences, present meanings and future aspirations of young people as influenced by the contracting state support and contradictory company policies in Bulgaria.
