Evolving Role of the Nursing Informatics Specialist

The scope of nursing informatics practice has been evolving over the course of the last 5 decades, expanding to address the needs of health care organizations and in response to the evolution of technology. In parallel, the educational preparation of nursing informatics specialists has become more formalized and shaped by the requisite competencies of the role. In this chapter, the authors describe the evolution of nursing informatics roles, scope and focus of practice, and anticipated role responsibilities and opportunities for the future. Further, implications and considerations for the future are presented.

An international survey to explore current and future trends in Nursing Informatics (NI) was done in 2015. This article explores responses to questions about: what should be done to further develop NI as an independent discipline ; existing policies and standards influencing NI; perceived support towards NI as a discipline; and advice from NI specialists to students and emerging professionals. Nurse and allied health professionals in academia and practice were reached with snowball sampling. Open-ended questions were analysed with thematic content analysis and the mean and standard deviation is reported for the perceived support towards NI (scale ranging from 1 (not at all supportive) to 10 (very supportive)). A total of 507 respondents from 46 countries responded to the survey. Respondents reported mediocre support towards NI from the environment (M 5.79, SD 2.60). Results showed that NI education needs development to better meet practice demands, that current NI resources seem insufficient, that NI expertise is not used to its full potential in health institutions and the community, and that NI needs to show its value through research and increase visibility to be recognised among stakeholders worldwide. In conclusion, there is a need to clarify NI as a discipline and a need for strong leadership to impact policy making. An increase in NI teaching at undergraduate level in nursing as well as an increase in postgraduate NI programmes worldwide would better support practice demands. National policies and international white papers in NI are needed to guide resource distribution to better support practice.

Technology plays an important role in educational and nursing work in today's complex health systems. Therefore it seems important to research the role of nurses and highlight the need for adequate training programs in information technology to be aligned with the ever-increasing speed of technology. The analysis was used, followed by an exhaustive search of the literature in databases and a library search based on keywords. The criteria used for selecting studies primarily focused on nursing informatics and the importance of expertise in the effective use of information technology in all aspects of the nursing profession. In a critical assessment of emerging technologies, the key elements of nursing informatics implementation were considered as healthcare promotion, advanced systems, internet, and network. Because of the nature and the development of the information age, it is required to receive the necessary IT training for all categories of nurses. To better take advantage of information technology in nursing results and health care quality and to motivate nurses due to the rapid advancement of technology, educational plans are advised to set short-term and long-term specialized courses focused on four target groups: learning, working, graduating, senior undergraduate, and doctoral graduate. It is expected that the outcome of this study would support educational providers with program growth.

Guideposts to the future—an agenda for nursing informatics

A b s t r a c t As new directions and priorities emerge in health care, nursing informatics leaders must prepare to guide the profession appropriately. To use an analogy, where a road bends or changes directions, guideposts indicate how drivers can stay on course. The AMIA Nursing Informatics Working Group (NIWG) produced this white paper as the product of a meeting convened: 1) to describe anticipated nationwide changes in demographics, health care quality, and health care informatics; 2) to assess the potential impact of genomic medicine and of new threats to society; 3) to align AMIA NIWG resources with emerging priorities; and 4) to identify guideposts in the form of an agenda to keep the NIWG on course in light of new opportunities. The anticipated societal changes provide opportunities for nursing informatics. Resources described below within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Committee for Health and Vital Statistics (NCVHS) can help to align AMIA NIWG with emerging priorities. The guideposts consist of priority areas for action in informatics, nursing education, and research. Nursing informatics professionals will collaborate as full participants in local, national, and international efforts related to the guideposts in order to make significant contributions that empower patients and providers for safer health care.

Nursing Informatics Research Trends: Findings from an International Survey

This follow-up survey on trends in Nursing Informatics (NI) was conducted by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Student and Emerging Professionals (SEP) group as a cross-sectional study in 2019. There were 455 responses from 24 countries. Based on the findings NI research is evolving rapidly. Current ten most common trends include: clinical quality measures, clinical decision support, big data, artificial intelligence, care coordination, education and competencies, patient safety, mobile health, description of nursing practices and evaluation of patient outcomes. The findings help support the efforts to efficiently use resources in the promotion of health care activities, to support the development of informatics education and to grow NI as a profession.

The Institute of Medicine's quality initiatives have collectively emphasized the importance of information technology to the transformation of health care. Not coincidentally, federal initiatives in 2004 have signaled the start of "the decade of health information technology." Building on those reports, this article describes the informatics revolution in process, and nursing's readiness to move in that direction. The promise of informatics in reshaping practice is sketched out in terms of seven aims for improvement, followed by a listing of some of the issues that must be addressed for nursing to realize those possibilities. In similar fashion, changes in academia are discussed both in terms of the promise of informatics applications and the barriers to achieving that preferred future. The article ends with some policy recommendations and reflections on opportunities at hand, particularly the growing emphasis on patient self-management support.

The Essence and Role of Nurses in the Future of Biomedical and Health Informatics

The whole healthcare system is evolving fast due to environmental pressure related to pandemics, climate change, personnel shortages, and financial limitations, to name but a few. Nurses are central actors in the sustainability of healthcare systems. Rapid technological development can support innovative means for holistic and applied critical thinking to improve healthcare delivery based on the uniqueness of nursing. Nurses need to develop adaptive and scientific skills regarding technologies and develop and apply these for better use of "smart" systems in care delivery. The paradigm shift in nursing roles will impact all levels of care, from primary to specialized care, all age groups, from newborn to elderly care, as well as all domains, such as preventive, reparative, rehabilitation, and palliative care. The impact of technologies on human behavior addresses humanfactors interaction, computer interaction, and other effects of technologies on wellbeing, including but not limited to robots and artificial intelligence-based assisting nursing deliveries. Nursing competencies need to be developed at all levels of education to prepare a mindset and culture of the healthcare workforce in a digital health system. Gamification and simulation as educational tools help prepare educators to educate healthcare clinicians and researchers who become key mediators between technologies and practice.

Nursing Informatics: Competency Challenges for Nursing Faculty

Nursing is the largest workforce in health care with nurses increasingly required to work with digital health technologies. However, despite the adoption of nursing informatics in Australia in the mid-1980s, nursing graduates are not being adequately equipped to use these technologies in a way that benefits the profession and improves patient care. Using a scoping review approach, this paper presents an analysis of contemporary published literature and describes the barriers to faculty engagement with digital health technologies in undergraduate nursing education. Thirty five articles were included and identified faculty lack of understanding of nursing informatics and resistance to technologies, limited infrastructure and expenditure, and limited educational resources and best practice recommendations as significant barriers to the integration of nursing informatics into undergraduate nursing curricula. Recommendations for faculty development will be explored.
