Energy management key practices: A proposed list for Malaysian universities
Journal homepage: www. …, 2011
This study embarks to propose a list of energy management key practices for Malaysian Universities. Energy management is beneficial for Malaysian university that confront expensive energy bill, for it have large build up areas, comprehensive facilities as well as large numbers of building users. The proposed list of energy management key practices is a complement to their existing practices and, to guide them in achieving energy sustainability. A non-experimental, quantitative, and survey research design was used. Questionnaire survey was performed in Malaysian public and private universities to obtain energy coordinators' perspective on the importance of proposed energy management key practices. This study suggests a total of 47 key practices are vital to manage energy in university, they were grouped into three major phases: "Planning", "Implementing", and "Monitoring and Evaluation". The results show that key practices pertain to involvement, measurement and verification, budget allocation, energy goals and objectives were considered very important by university energy coordinators. Although technology approach seems impressive, result shows it is not their prior choice. Also, some of the soft energy management key practices, such as "develop education plan" and "advice on energy matters" are not considered important by the energy coordinators. The paper confirms the importance of the proposed list of energy management key practices, the list would be applicable to university to monitor and measure their energy performance.
Energy Auditing Measures for a Private Educational Institution in Sta. Ana Pampanga: A Case Study
Asian Journal of Applied Science and Technology (AJAST), 2024
One of the ways to identify the areas of the building that wastes energy then reduces energy consumption is by conducting an energy audit. This study aimed to conduct an energy audit, specifically a Walk-Through Analysis, on Holy Cross College, a Type 1 Designated Establishment. Specifically, it evaluated the energy consumption practices of the institution when it comes to their lighting system, equipment usage, employee energy conservation practices, air-conditioning units, and building envelope. Aside from the result of the qualitative observations of the researchers, they also conducted a quantitative energy conservation assessment brought by the illumination and cooling systems of HCC. It was found out that there are energy saving opportunities that could be utilized by the institution to reduce their energy consumption and save utility costs. The results of the analysis showed that the ACUs of every building is the system where energy is being wasted or used inefficiently. The EEMS proposed by the researchers were all presented with references and their corresponding investment cost and level of savings. Aside from that, if every room in each building were to set their ACUs to 24 degrees Celsius, they would be able to save an approximate of 15063.84 kWh which is worth ₱ 115,153.18 monthly. Lastly, if HCC is to invest and utilize twenty-six pieces of 15W LED Bulb for replacement in the college corridor, the total investment cost would be ₱ 3,250.00 which has a return on investment of 214.2%, and a payback period of about 3 months and 25 days.
Energy efficiency management in public university campi-a Brazilian case
The Brazilian pioneer experience in energy efficiency management in public university campi is the Permanent Program in Efficient Energy Use of the University of São Paulo (PURe), running since 1997. Total built area of the university totalizes above 1 million square meters throughout more than 20 cities in the state of São Paulo, which results in a very complex energy use network comprising several different end uses. Interaction between actions and appliance purchases throughout our campi under the scope of PURe, for the sake of energy management in the University, is described along this paper. Energy bills and contracting, retrofits, experiences in usage of renewables, education and diffusion of information on energy efficiency and rational energy use are some among the described instruments, and accruing savings are shown.
Energy Audit: A Case Study of UET Jalozai Campus
International Journal of Engineering, 2019
Pakistan is facing a decade long worst crises of energy. The demand supply gaps, heavy dependence on imported fossil fuel and inefficient consumption patterns are major thematic reasons of crises. Energy conservation is a low hanging fruits which can be materialized to answer the crises. This is a joint academia and industry projects, where detailed energy audit of educational facility of University of Engineering and Technology Jalozai Campus was carried. The significant energy consumer areas of educational building like lighting, Heating and cooling system and generation plants were deeply investigated. In additions, the male and female boarding houses were audited. Based on Illumination Engineering Standards and ASHRAE level III benchmarking, various energy conservations measures were recommended including efficient lighting system, installation of occupancy sensors, office appliances scheduling and transition towards energy efficient fans. The suggested recommendations implementations are capable to save a 22.3% of electricity in the facility. The economic analysis shows a payback period six to eighteen months for various conservation measures. In addition, a behavioral training and mobilization drive is highly recommended to build the conservation culture on gross root level as integrated part of societal practices and cultural values.
TESEA, transactions on energy systems and engineering applications, 2022
The university belongs to the services sector, which is why it cannot implement traditional industry indicators such as energy consumption per unit produced. For this reason, we propose indicators for the final use of energy. The indicators were developed through an energy review process of the information in the database of advanced energy meters with the support of the Specialist in Geographic Information Systems of the Environmental Management Office (EMO). Additionally, we considered several existing reports that characterized the final use of energy for some buildings and essential data for defining the percentages each final use will have within the conglomerate of loads registered. Continuity was also given to this process by collecting face-to-face information with the support of each building's environmental manager. This article shows the behavior of two buildings of the National University-Bogotá, the Uriel Gutiérrez building and the Roberto Franco Station, to propose an indicator of final energy use. This approach enabled determining in which end-use the load has the highest consumption, taking into account that this may contribute to the management system energy of the university. This article uses the guidelines implemented in the ISO 50001 standard.
Energy use and energy efficiency, the way to reduce energy consumption in university buildings
2013
The Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) has been developing since 1996 a number of actions and strategies to reduce the energy consumption of its 96 buildings. From the collaboration agreement signed in 2006 with the Catalan Institute of Energy (ICAEN), UPC has agreed to develop measures to encourage energy savings and enhance energy efficiency on its own buildings, distributed over ten campuses. The University of Guadalajara is the second largest in Mexico hosting more than 260,000 students, plus professors, researchers and administrative staff. The monthly consumption of electricity amounts to about 4 GWh (about 360,000 dollars per month), being one of the companies that more electric energy demands in the State of Jalisco. One of the first actions taken to reduce the consumption and cost of energy in the University has been the realization of energy diagnostics in various university units, as well as installation of photovoltaic systems. However, little has been addressed since point of view of energy management, so in this work a management system is being introduced that is being implemented in a university unit, based on the international standard ISO-50001:2011; the purpose of the standard is to improve energy performance according to the cycle of continuous improvement (plan-make-verify-act), allowing short-term economic benefits, in addition to the reduction of greenhouse gases. The results will allow us to evaluate the intervention process in the rest of the University.
