Slavenobolgarskiy predruchniy poslatelnik za nastavleniе na bolgarskite yunoshi (1835) by the prominent Revival pedagogues Neofit Bozveli and Emanuil Vaskidovich is one of the first two published Modern Bulgarian manuals and textbooks on letter writing in the history of the Bulgarian didactic literature. Following the inherited classical structure of epistolary manuals that consists of a definition, purpose, classification, arrangement of the constituent parts and stylistic guidelines, this book provides examples of letter writing models, along with details on the theory of epistolary style. The article studies the unique system of practical advice and theoretical guidelines proposed by the authors, concerning the composition of well-worded and grammatically correct letters, on the one hand, and their composition and shaping in accordance with the existing formal rules, on the other. The subject of interpretation is Bozveli and Vaskidovich’s views regarding letter structure, components, and requisites, and the appropriate etiquette expressions matching the relevant requisites and the type of letter.

QUESTION MARK SHAPED EARRINGS FROM MEDIEVAL DANUBIAN BULGARIA (13-14th CENTURY): ON THE MATERIAL TRACES OF CUMANS AND THE GOLDEN HORDE IN THE CULTURE OF THE SECOND BULGARIAN KINGDOM , 2019

The study is focused on Eastern influences and their physical agents in the culture of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Manifestations of such influences are often neglected at the expense of the hyper-interpreted ‘Byzantization’ of the Balkan territories in 13-14th century. Eastern influences are examined through the prism of a specific type of jewellery – so called question mark shaped earrings. The author considers theories for their origin and spread in the Middle Ages and endorses the idea of nomadic type of fashion, emerged in the culture of Asian nations of the so-called Kimak-Kipchak circle and spread during their migrations. Subsequently this fashion flourished in the culture of the Golden Horde and acquires supra-ethnic character, emerging in the areas of influence of the nomadic empire as well. Bulgaria and the Balkans fall into this orbit in the second half of the 13th century. Over 70 question mark shaped earrings, stored in Bulgarian museums, were traced, described and classified. They are spread mainly in North Bulgaria with a focus on north-eastern region widely inhabited in the Middle Ages by Cumans and a contact zone between the Golden Horde and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in 14th century. Among the question mark shaped earrings prevail those made by silver, often with extra gold plating, followed by those made by bronze. Earrings made by gold are relatively little and with limited area of spread. Scarce data on the place of discovery of the earrings shows their prevalence in children’s and women’s graves without clear information on which side of the head were worn. In the concluding part the author summarizes in brief the known material traces of the Cumans and the Golden Horde, stored in Bulgarian museums. The idea that in 13th century the cultural and ethnic map of Medieval Bulgaria acquires Cumans features while in the first half of the 14th century – Tatar features is endorsed. These processes were realized in the lack of or quite weak political and cultural impact of the Byzantine factor – until early 1360s. Byzantine does not exist while the restored Palaeologus country is far from the prestige and glory of the Byzantine Empire in previous eras. For this reason, knowledge and study of the cultural scene in medieval Bulgaria in the last centuries of its independent existence suggests comprehensive studying of the processes in the East and the influences that determine to a large extent the fate of the Balkans’ Southeast in 13-14th century.

ШУМЕНЦИ В БЕЛГИЙСКИ УЧЕБНИ ЗАВЕДЕНИЯ (КРАЯ НА ХІХ – НАЧАЛОТО НА ХХ ВЕКА)

The historical narrative depicts young people of Shumen who were educated in Belgian schools in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They studied in today's cities of Brussels, Liege, Ghent, Gembloux and Antwerp. In the period from 1879 to 1912, 39 young people born in Shumen studied in Belgian schools. Among them were the girls Hristina Velichkova and Elena Vitanova. Several of them studied at two or more universities. For example, Stefan Kurtev studied at the New and Old Universities in Brussels, as well as in Ghent, Boris L. Velev studied in Liege and Brussels. A significant number of these people later worked in various spheres of lifeas military, officials, bankers, directors of institutions. Irrespective of the fact that some of them hadn't graduated from the respective institutions, they returned to their homeland with a good knowledge of European languages and familiarity with the achievements of the Western European civilization. Their large number, as well as the specialties chosen by them, are a vivid testimony to the aspiration of the young people of Shumen to receive better education and to contribute to the modernization of the Third Bulgarian State and their native Shumen.

Origin, Identity and Closure of the Archbishopric of Bulgaria in Ohrid Ivan Yovchev The theme about Archbishopric of Bulgaria in Ohrid is extremely relevant today, when disputes about its origin, identity and closure search the final resolution. This study is an attempt for a full disclosure of the truth on the basis of the available source materials. The main testimonies are the Chrysobulls of Basil II, which are a reliable historical source, although only their copies have reached us, not the originals. Undoubtedly, the Imperial Sigils played a very important historical role in the life of Bulgarian nation and church, drawing the border between Bulgarian and Greek nations. This helped Bulgarians to preserve and consolidate their national instinct and aspiration for spiritual sovereignty.
