Exploring ‘Gift’ Theories for New Immigrants' Literacy Education in Taiwan

This paper addresses ‘the gift’ as the central concept in a discussion about the literacy education for new immigrants that has been developing in Taiwan since the early 1990s. The point of departure for this discussion is the advent of international marriages that are the consequence of new arrivals from Southeast Asia and China, and their effect guest/host relationship. In the first half of the article, I apply Marcel Mauss’ idea of gift in order to examine the interactions within this host/guest relationship, engaging the ideologies that underpin the new immigrants’ literacy education, and the ways in which new immigrants are identified in Taiwanese society. In the second half of this article, I use Jacques Derrida’s critique of Mauss’ theory of the gift to explore Derrida’s own idea of the gift, with the particular objective of evaluating the question of how national identity in Taiwanese society relates to the new immigrants’ literacy education policy.
In order to study the differences between good English learners and bad English learners of Chinese minority preparatory college students in English acquisition, 148 of them who study in Minzu University of China are selected as the subjects, and the methods of Questionnaire and Interview are used to collect data. The study finds that the successful English learners of minority preparatory college students have a low level of anxiety and the strong autonomous learning ability. They use more learning strategies and they are willing to seek academic help.

ABSTRACT: With the growing number of learners of Chinese worldwide (Mandarin, Cantonese, or other varieties)--in Greater China, in the expanding diaspora, and in traditional foreign-language contexts, such as North American schools and universities--research on the teaching, learning and use of Chinese has expanded rapidly. Language socialization represents one such fertile area of study. This chapter describes recent work at the intersection of language socialization and second language acquisition (SLA) with particular reference to Chinese. We provide a historical review of relevant language socialization research and then differentiate socialization and acquisition. Studies are then presented on socialization into a variety of Chinese linguistic and pragmatic routines and grammatical structures, such as affective sentence-final particles and other stance markers, and the social, cultural, and affective meanings and values associated with them. Finally, we suggest future directions for research in Chinese second-language socialization.

Blended learning is an increasingly prevalent trend in College English acquisition. This research seeks to study the influence of a blended learning environment to English acquisition, and the differences between the high- achieving learners and the low-achieving learners for Chinese minority preparation college students in English acquisition. Eighty students were selected as the research subjects, and the research instruments included questionnaire and interview questions to collect data. The study results show that a blended learning environment, to some degree, can help learners overcome anxiety and cultivate autonomous learning abilities. In addition, high-achieving language learners are willing to ask for help from others when they encounter problems; they are able to choose their learning strategies on their own, and have the strong ability of self-learning. In this article, the authors consider the problems of the growing popularity of learning the Chinese language which is nowadays becoming more and more demanded and actual in the spheres of world trading businesses, culture and science. For successful and effective mastering Chinese, it is recommended to learn it, as well as other foreign languages by using the method of immersion in the native speakers’ country. Thus, for people willing to learn Chinese there are two alternative variants. In the first case, one studies it as a part of linguistic tourism combining recreation and education and this kind of programs is focused on tastes and financial possibilities of tourists. In the second case, the studies are organized in the state universities and colleges of PRC and considered as education. Constraints Occurring in the First Stages of Learning Chin ese by Polish Beginner Students Learning a language is always demanding, especially when you decide upon learning it in a certain age, or when the decision of learning it is encouraged or decided by someone els e. The motivation factors are always different, thus the language acquisition is also going to be somewhat different. It is crucial to have a desire to learn a language, especially when it is as diff icult as Chinese. Chinese, as a nation, is one of the mos t traditional nations on Earth, using the script which has been used for over five thousands of years. Although, it has undergone numerous changes, and we can look at characters from a totally new perspective, as if it was a totally new language than the o ne used before, it has its roots in the ancient Chinese character writing style. What is more, the stroke order and the precision in writing every stroke in the manner it has been written over those thousands of years, is still considered to be crucial for the Chinese native speakers. It might be compared to Polish orthography, something necessary in order to write proper Polish words, phrases, sentences. The aim of this article is to provide the analysis of the Chinese language acquisition of characters by beginner students of various ages divided into two language groups: youth and adults. Various aspects of learning Chinese characters will be analyzed, with special emphasis on the constraints the students need to deal with in the process of learning the characters. What is more, each aspect will be summarized and certain examples from class observation and other sources will be provided, in order to illustrate the entire scope of a particular learning problem. Finally, the most important elements will be summarized and pointed out in order to give a conclusion to the entire article.
