Abstract

Hundreds of millions of illustrations based on data are generated every year. They often end their short lives in studies, PowerPoint presentations and publications. That doesn't have to be the case, because - an analogy from nature - these “image caterpillars“, after technical transformation, become "butterflies" that can fly into the material world and/ or Virtual Reality.
