Moral Teaching of Religion in Conducting Social Behavior: An Islamic Perspective

Nowadays human beings are extremely cruel selfish and inhuman in their behavior to other human beings. As a result peace becomes rare in society. But human nature is pure. Indifference to religious teachings and lack of morality work as prime reasons behind this situation. Religion provides lessons on pacifism, nonviolence, tolerance, moderation and holism to its followers. The heart of all religions is ‘love one another’. Religion encourages virtues such as self-restraint, patience, forgiveness and compassion. Similarly Religion discourages bad conducts and evil deeds. By practicing the moral teachings of religion, people can make the ideal social behavior that ensures a peaceful environment. As a religion, Islam urges its followers to practice appropriate and tasteful social behavior at all times to maintain a peaceful society and a peaceful world.

The Moral Community of Muslims

2004

International crime statistics indicate that in Islamic countries crime rates are lower than in other countries. This feature of Islamic countries is most often explained by two factors: a) the relatively low level of development, which has a positive effect on crime rates, and b) the strictness of Islamic penal law. Providing some evidence, this article maintains that the first factor fails to explain properly the difference in the crime rates of Islamic and non-Islamic countries at a similar level of development. It also argues that the second explanation is a reductionist one. Following a Weberian approach, the article develops the argument that the content and structure of Islamic belief and practice is the dominant shared element among Islamic countries. It has given rise to a particular socio-cultural structure among Muslims, one of the impacts of which has been the low crime rate. Islamic beliefs and practice, therefore, are discussed as the main explanatory factor for the lo...

Moral Change in a Global Village: Islamic Perspective

IAMURE International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, 2012

The attacks and criticism against ethics is a common part of philosophy. In modern age, due to scientific revolution and its great achievement and development, some scholars argue against any ethical system based on religion. But in the present century, the attacks against ethical role of religion take a different shape. Present century is distinguished from other centuries by its Information-Technology character .It is easy to see with wonder how Information-Technology has reduced the world to a global village through internet and satellite. The question is whether in such a world –global village-moral values are workable and possible? Educational and moral values, in general, aim at producing desired changes in the new generation. This goal was always fulfilled through building limited condition and making barriers. Today, it is impossible to keep new generations away from other cultures due to Information-Technology. It means in global village, making barriers do not work, and in...

FOSTERING HARMONIOUS SOCIETAL CONSTRUCTS THROUGH ISLAMIC PRINCIPLES

Al-Risalah Jurnai Studi Agama Dan PemiKiran Islam, 2024

The paper underscores the profound impact of Islamic principles in promoting understanding, unity, and peaceful coexistence within societal constructs. Drawing from various facets of Islamic teachings deeply rooted in the Qur'an and the Prophet's guidance, the study advocates for compassion, justice, and inclusivity in societal construction. The convergence of these principles serves as a beacon for fostering coexistence and justice, offering pathways to construct harmonious societies. Following an extensive exploration of inter-group relations in the region, the study proposes a set of recommendations to address challenges and cultivate lasting harmony. These recommendations encompass initiatives such as education and awareness programs to bridge gaps, community-based conflict resolution mechanisms, advocacy for inclusive governance, support for interfaith dialogue and collaboration, civic engagement and empowerment, enhanced security measures, collaboration with NGOs and international bodies, media sensitization campaigns, incorporation of Islamic perspectives into education and outreach, and continual research for adaptive strategies and effectiveness monitoring. The implementation of these recommendations is envisioned to create an environment conducive to peaceful coexistence, understanding, and shared prosperity within Nigeria, particularly Taraba State.

Ihsan as Islamic Ethical Virtue for Neighborhood Community Coexistence

This study demonstrates that there is a need of addressing neighborhood relationships in contemporary times. And in this regard, a position from Islam is considered in which neighborly relationships are based on Quranic ethical virtue ihsan i.e., doing good to others. The word neighbor in the Quran and Hadith is a general term that is not discriminatory. It includes Muslims and non-Muslims. This insight is very useful for building relationships in multicultural and multireligious communities for harmony and peace. To locate a neighbor, though there are jurisprudential opinions, leaving it to its customary use is preferred in this study. The neighborhood rights and duties are given in detail. And it is also demonstrated that those prophetic narrations in which harming neighbors or committing sins against them is considered as the consequence of the absence of faith in fact show the disgust of such sinful acts; therefore, a sinful Muslim is not considered as a non-believer. The harm is especially illustrated with infringing the privacy of a neighbor. It has been shown that Ihsan includes ethically both non-maleficence and beneficence. Most of the prophetic traditions can be classified under these two categories. In addition to this, it is also shown that the neighborhood relations in Islam also include the Golden Rule which is all-encompassing and in principle exhaustive.

An ethical framework for the study of society according to the Quran

Religion plays a significant role in satisfying our physical as well as spiritual needs: Islam teaches us a code of behavior and gives us a meaning for our existence. Islam has unique morality of its own. It puts great deal of emphasis, for example, on equality and justice and emphasizes dignity of all human beings. We will deal with these issues in the course of this paper and its impact on social life of the human being. The main factor of the decline of Muslims and Muslim society in particular is the ignorance/illiteracy towards religion (including all affairs political, social etc). The people (ignorant) who cannot differentiate in-between what is right and wrong are always ready to accept every kind of absurdity and when not in a position of having the solution to the queries always become the target of rivals deception and seduction. The other factor is the decline or demise of the morals/ethics. We have put aside the saying in the Quran regarding good morals which our ancestors had followed thus touched the great heights. This fact is not hidden that as compared to other things, morals and ethics play a greater role in the rise and decline in the Nations. Its presence in every Nation is very important. Key words: Quran, ethics, society, Islam, morality, Muslim, women.
