In: J. Horvat (ed.), The Roman army between the Alps and the Adriatic, Opera Instituti Archaeologici Sloveniae 31, Studia Alpium et Adriae I, 2016

The significant unrest that characterized the final decades of the 3rd century lead to intensive control over communication routes and to the fortification of the most important settlements in the south-eastern Alpine area. Two assemblages originating from south-western Slovenia are presented to achieve a better understanding of the period. The hoard from Prelovce near Malovše dated to the second half of the 3rd century and consisted of horse harness decoration, a military belt, and a combat knife. The hoard may suggest army movement or military control of the main road. A group of sixteen graves was found in Javor near Dolnji Zemon, and the majority of them originate from the second half of the 3rd century. The grave goods in two graves indicate a military affiliation of the deceased; a female grave containing silver jewellery corroborates the special social position of the whole group. It is possible that a military detachment was stationed at Javor near Dolnji Zemon, and controlled the road from Tarsatica to the Postojna basin. Keywords: South-western Slovenia, second half of the 3rd century, Prelovce near Malovše, Javor near Dolnji Zemon, hoards, graves, horse harness decoration, combat knives, jewellery

Fifteen years after the Höhensiedlungen meeting in Freiburg we take a look at the late antique fortified hilltop settlements in Slovenia and at the new information these fifteen years of research have brought. Among others, steps were made in understanding settlement roles in micro regions, in their early medieval use, the rare lowland settlement traces, potential relationships between both types of settlement and in understanding some parts of the trade network that linked them to the Mediterranean.

Archaeology in five states - A peculiarity or just another story at the crossroads of 'Mitteleuropa' and the Balkans: Case study of Slovene archaeology

History of Slovenian archaeology reveals a pattern of sharp ruptures (both in infrastructure and in concept) concomitant with major political changes. However, in order to understand the development of archaeological discipline a set of factors and contingencies operating on a smaller scale should also be taken into consideration. The aim of this paper is not to present the history of the archaeological discipline in Slovenia ordered according to the historical and chronological developments only, but rather to focus on some crucial aspects and contingencies, which considerably conditioned its course in the last 150 years.
