Transformative initiatives celebrated at the Global Media and Information Literacy Awards 2019

Gothenburg, Sweden, is the home of the UNESCO-led Global Alliance for Partnership on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL) from 24-27 September 2019. This UNESCO-led network, presented the fourth edition of the Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Awards at the Global MIL Week Feature Conference. The GAPMIL network unanimously recognized six recipients for their groundbreaking contributions to promoting MIL for all. The awardees range from NGO’s, development organizations, to individual efforts. In no particular order, they are UNICEF Montenegro, the scientific journal Revista Comunicar (Spain), Prof. Alexander V. Fedorov (Russia), Mr Frank Baker (USA), the Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights Activation (PYALARA) and the free news literacy project NewsWise (UK).

Alton Grizzle works at the UNESCO HQ in Paris as Programme Specialist in Communication and Information. He manages UNESCO global actions relating to gender and media and is co-manager of UNESCO's global actions on media and information literacy (MIL). He is a PhD candidate at the Autonomous University of Barcelona on the topic citizens' response to MIL competencies.

The emerging field of media and information literacy studies continues to be influenced by a wide range of interdisciplinary research. An inventory of current research on media and information literacy, using Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education (SIMILE) as a database, reveal emphases in studies about schools and education, library usage, mass media, intercultural communication, and global media. As individuals around the globe are empowered by their media and information literacy skills, it is possible that these abilities will be harnessed as cultural tools in the grassroots battles to maintain local and national identities.

Media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue

We are pleased to be sharing with you the second yearbook on media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue. The first MILID Yearbook was published in June 2013. Then, as now, the publication is the result of a collaboration between the UNITWIN Cooperation Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue and Nordicom's International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media. The theme of the 2014 Yearbook is Global Citizenship in a Digital World. Global citizenship assumes ease of participation in global spaces in which persons are media and information literate and are equipped with competencies and attitudes to deal with the multi-faceted nature of a mediated world in which information is no longer bound by space or time. The unprecedented access to and use of media and Internet technologies for communication and collaboration especially among youth, suggest that effective strategies must be found to enable active critical inquiry and effective media production. The proliferation of mediated spaces throughout education environments, as well as personal and professional environments, does not in itself guarantee that citizens will consider their role as global citizens as they create and consume media. This awareness must be cultivated, encouraged and taught. The UNITWIN Cooperation Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) is based on an initiative from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). This network was created in line with UNESCO's mission and objectives, as well as the mandate of the UNAOC, to serve as a catalyst and facilitator helping to give impetus to innovative projects aimed at reducing polarization among nations and cultures through mutual partnerships.
