The Acceptance and Use of Mobile Learning Applications in Higher Education

Many individuals are increasingly using ubiquitous technologies, including interactive applications (apps) that are widely available on our mobile devices, including the smart phones and tablets. Therefore, in the last few years, educators and policy makers have introduced mobile learning (m-learning) technologies in order to support their students during their learning journey. A thorough literature review suggests that there are several contributions in academia that have investigated the students' acceptance and use of technology, in different contexts. In this light, this research has integrated valid and reliable measures from the Technology Acceptance Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior to better understand the university students' readiness to engage with mobile technologies for educational purposes. Specifically, this study explores the perceived usefulness and ease of use of m-learning technologies. Moreover, it investigated whether the research participants were influenced by their friends, acquaintances and educators to engage with these technologies and / or by the facilitating conditions at their university. The findings revealed that students held positive attitudes toward the m-learning technologies as they perceived them as useful and easy to use. Moreover, the university's facilitating conditions had a significant effect on the students' usage of these technologies. This study also reported that the students' social influences did not have an effect on their intention to use these devices.
The Technology Acceptance of Mobile Applications in Education

This research explores the educators' attitudes and behavioural intention toward mobile applications. The methodology integrates measures from 'the pace of technological innovativeness' and the 'technology acceptance model' to understand the rationale for further investment in mobile learning (m-learning). A quantitative study was carried out amongst two hundred forty-one educators in small EU state. It has investigated the costs and benefits of using ubiquitous resources, including tablets for m-learning in schools. A principal component analysis has indicated that the educators were committed to using mobile technologies. In addition, a stepwise regression analysis has shown that the younger teachers were increasingly engaging in m-learning resources. In conclusion, this contribution puts forward key implications for both academia and practitioners.
Modeling Students' Readiness to Adopt Mobile Learning in Higher Education: An Empirical Study

Mobile devices are increasingly coming to penetrate people's daily lives. Mobile learning (m-learning) is viewed as key to the coming era of electronic learning (e-learning). In the meantime, the use of mobile devices for learning has made a significant contribution to delivering education among higher education students worldwide. However, while m-learning is being widely adopted in developed countries, the adoption of such an approach in developing countries is still immature and underdeveloped. Developing countries are facing several challenges and lagging behind in terms of adopting m-learning in higher education. Thus, this paper explores the factors that have an impact on students' intentions and readiness to adopt m-learning in higher education in Jordan. Based on the data collected from the field, we examine Jordanian students' requirements and preferences in terms of m-learning design, and we also investigate their concerns about adopting m-learning. This empirical study collected data from students using a paper-based questionnaire. The results reveal that students' intentions to adopt m-learning is influenced by several factors that include the relative advantage, complexity, social influence, perceived enjoyment, and the self-management of learning. By providing a picture of students' willingness to adopt m-learning, this study offers useful and beneficial implications for developers of m-learning applications and for educational providers to guide the design and implementation of comprehensive m-learning systems.

As technology-mediated innovations like Mobile Learning Devices (MLDs) spread rapidly across the globe, there are growing concerns on the actual factors that influence students in Higher Educational institutions (HEIs) to accept technology-mediated innovations like smartphones, tablets, and portable computing devices for their educational pursuit. This study adopted Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a theoretical basis in an attempt to investigate factors that might influence students to accept or decline the use of technology-mediated innovations specifically MLDs for academic purposes from the perspectives of three universities in Ghana. A set of online questionnaire survey was used to collect the needed data from (N=1,030) students. The researchers also conducted data analysis and presentation of findings by testing the suggested research model through Structural Equation Modelling. A regression analysis was also carried out with the help of SmartPLS to assess the path coefficient of the data collected for the model. This study identified influencing factors such as students' awareness levels, m-learning technology types, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness as some of the central factors that determine how students use and accept m-learning devices in Ghanaian universities. The study reported limitations such as expensive internet data, poor internet infrastructure, insecurity, privacy issues, and unavailability of electricity as some of the factors limiting the acceptance of MLDs by students in Ghana. Despite the limitations reported in this study, the results from the statistical analysis, show that there are high levels of MLDs acceptance among students from the three sampled higher educational institutions in Ghana. The study recommends that school authorities and governments in developing countries such as Ghana incorporate MLDs in their current higher educational systems.
Factors Influencing the Adoption of Mobile Applications in Facilitating Learning

Mobile Technologies have an increasing trend in the role of student’s academic lives. The emergence of smart phone has brought dramatic changes to the education field. As the global market is becoming more reliant on mobile technology, education field is yet to reap the benefits offered by the advancement of mobile technology. They enable students to acquire knowledge and have been seen as a form of learning. However, the uptakes of mobile applications for learning among students have not been well received. Therefore, the intent of study is to understand about student’s acceptance of mobile applications as a form of learning. In this study, the modified DOI model will be used to identify the influences of the adoption of mobile applications in facilitating learning. This research is able to provide an in-depth insight on the adoption process through the five attributes of relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, triability and observability. Furthermore, three additional constructs namely copyright clearance, mobile skillfulness and perceived enjoyment will be incorporated into the DOI framework. These additional constructs provide a comprehensive view on the copyright, mobile functions and enjoyable with the adoption of mobile applications. The findings will be useful for academicians. In addition, this research will contribute significantly to the society as its result can be applied to the adoption of mobile applications in the global education field.

Learning with mobile technologies – Students’ behavior

The increasing growth of mobile technology in our Society has become a reality. This paper was designed to research about the different factors and drivers that could influence students' behaviour into the usage of mobile technologies for learning. The methodology was based on a quantitative survey grounded on the Technology Acceptance Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Data were collected from medical students in University of Coimbra. This model pointed to a behaviour pattern based on the experience and application by medical students, correlating with a strong attitude towards using mobile technology for learning (57%) and willingness to recommend it (40.5%). In line with previous studies, Social Influence raised to be an important factor towards the Attitude and Behavioural Intention of using Mobile Learning. In addition, according to the results, the student's ease of perception seems to be the main factor affecting the Social Influence (31.9%) and the reliability for recommending this technology for learning was the main factor that affected the Behavioural Intention. Findings provide support for Technology Acceptance Model and the implications of these findings are discussed within the context of Innovation in Education.
An Assessment of university undergraduates’ adoption of mobile technologies for learning

The study examined influence of undergraduates’ perceived usefulness and ease of use of mobile technologies on its adoption for learning. Two research questions guided the study. Four hundred (400) students were randomly selected from the two purposively selected universities in Ogun State South West Nigeria. The study employed multiple regressions in the analysis of the data collected. From the result it was found out that undergraduate students’ perceived usefulness (=0.305, t=3.867, p<.05) has significant contribution on the adoption of mobile technologies for learning. Also, it was established that undergraduate students’ perceived ease of use (=0.151, t=1.992, p<.05) has significant contribution on the adoption of mobile technologies for learning. Student Characteristics and Variables That Determine Mobile Learning Adoption: An Initial Study
With the advent of smatter and more powerful mobile devices, educators have started looking at how these devices can be incorporated into education, to better support learners. Mobile Learning (ML) can be seen as a way to support learners and complement the existing learning structure. However the introduction and inclusion of mobile technology may not be suitable to all learners and therefore there may be some aspect of resistance to the inclusion of this tool to support learners. A small scale study was done of students enrolled in New Zealand in a tertiary qualification with the aims of determining the student's perspectives of ICT (information and communication technology) and specifically ML integration. The results of this survey will form the basis of a wide scale survey of tertiary students in order to provide a comprehensive summary of student characteristics and variables that best discriminate between students that are likely to adopt mobile learning and those who are less likely to adopt.
