Dolly Back (1987) (original) (raw)
2020, A Cuban Cinema Companion. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield
Shot in a ten-minute long take with no cuts, Dolly Back is Juan Carlos Tabío's first experiment in self-reflexive humor. It received several awards, such as the First Prize in the Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival (1987) and the Special Jury Prize in the Havana's Eighth International Festival of New Latin American Cinema. The film establishes some of the leitmotifs of the director's subsequent career: the mischievous nature of reality, the use of parody as social critique, and the need to critically question appearances.

Journeys in Argentine and Brazilian Cinema
There is a large body of South American films that use the popular road movie format to examine regional culture and attitudes, especially in Argentina and Brazil. These films, made from the 1990s onwards, take into account the neoliberal post-dictatorship context of the Southern Cone as well as the impact of globalization on Latin American cultures. Pinazza performs a careful cultural analysis of the films and investigates how road movies deal with narratives on nationhood whilst simultaneously inserting themselves in a transnational dialogue. Her comparative approach to national cinemas in South America provides insights on the mediation of the economic, sociological, and cultural elements that affect and are reflected in the films produced in the region.
Contemporary Uruguayan cinemas
Studies in Spanish & Latin-American Cinemas, 2019
This introduction to the special issue on Uruguayan cinema outlines the unifying thematic (of exploring contemporary Uruguayan cinemas) and the manner of exploration (from outside the country looking in, and, from inside looking out – a ‘hermeneutic circle’). It also situates the issue with respect to the field of scholarly work on Uruguayan cinema (exploring reasons behind the relative lack of scholarly interest in Uruguayan filmmaking), and Latin American cinema more broadly, before briefly discussing the articles in turn.
